“I’m not flexible enough.”
“I don’t wear spandex.”
“I’m not vegan, and I love beer.”
“Yoga is for women.”
Ever hear your guy friend use these excuses for not coming with you to class? Yeah. We have too.
When Michael James Wong first started traveling to Bulgaria to teach yoga in 2014, locals would chuckle. He was a man, after all—and yoga, (yes, even in Bulgaria), is a woman’s game. “Fast forward four years,” Wong says, “and there are as many men as there are women at the festivals and workshops that I teach. The growth and evolution of yoga among men has been phenomenal.”
The revolution of men’s yoga isn’t only happening in Eastern Europe. According to a 2016 report by Yoga Alliance, there are more male practitioners than ever before—an estimated 10 million men in 2016, up from 4 million in 2012. Wong founded BOYS OF YOGA (BOYS) in 2015 to help draw attention to these oft-forgotten practitioners—what he calls the uncelebrated minority of the yoga community. Through workshops, inspiring social media accounts, and an upcoming new book, BOYS is working to shift the stereotype of male yogis.
Wong likens the idea of guys saying they “can’t go to yoga because they can’t touch their toes” to the idea that someone would refuse to shower because they’re too dirty, or refusing dinner because they’re too hungry. “When we look at it through this lens, yoga is exactly what guys need to do,” he says.
Unfortunately these excuses are only half the story. “The idea that yoga isn’t ‘manly’ is again a narrow and esoteric idea,” says Wong. “Being manly isn’t about defining something to be tough, hardcore, or aggressive.” Besides, he says, “it begs the question: What’s wrong with being soft?”
For Wong, yoga is a practice that gives you exactly what you need when you come to the mat. Guys often come to the mat wanting something rather than respecting what their bodies are needing, he says. “If you’re the type that lives in a high impact, high-speed, high-strung, hard-hitting, chaotic life, coming to yoga to “soften up” is hardly a bad thing.”
Besides, like regular practitioners know, not all yoga is fluffy and gentle and full of feelings. “If you’re of the mindset that a physical asana yoga practice won’t give you the stimulation you get from your gym routines, HIIT classes, or weekend sports league,” says Wong, “all you need to do is spend 60 minutes in a power yoga class and I’m certain your tune will change. The beauty of yoga is that there is something for everyone—you just need to explore what is right for you.”
But it’s not just male yogis arguing that yoga is more than just floor stretching and a lifestyle of nut milk and crystals. Last year, the NFL released a film about Keith Mitchell’s journey from injury back to the field—using yoga as an integral part of recovery, and the National Hockey League employs yoga teachers for individual teams. We double (down) dog dare anyone to call these athletes soft.
Ironically enough, when the earliest instance of yoga was recorded it was a male-only practice. The first known woman to be invited to study traditional yoga was Indra Devi, in 1937. It was largely due to Devi’s outreach that yoga gained such traction in the U.S., and the rest is history. Wong notes that the wave of interest from women really helped to bring yoga to the masses, which in turn encouraged a big upswing in the early wellness movement.
But it’s time, now, to bring men back into the fold. “As we continue to grow in the ever changing world of yoga, I believe that BOYS is a project that is really about bringing the guys back to the conversation so that everyone can enjoy together. Yoga, much like life, is best enjoyed when everyone is involved and enjoying it,” says Wong. He hopes that one day a personal yoga practice will be as common as having a walking or running routine. And while he’s grateful for all the positive feedback he’s received as BOYS continues to shift the needle, he ultimately looks toward the day when the project will no longer be necessary. “I always believed that if the project can achieve what we set out to do, then in time it renders itself obsolete,” he says.
The new BOYS book, Sit Down, Be Quiet, aims to open more doors to the practice by including as much accessible information in the same place for guys ready to pick up the mat for the first time. Filled with hundreds of photos from men all over the world—as well as stories, instructions, and sometimes-surprising confessions from practitioners—it’s meant to support anyone the the journey. (Trust us, ladies: While the resources are specific for men, this isn’t something you’ll regret having on your coffee table.)
The Larger Conversation
The increasing prevalence of yoga among men resonates in this current moment. Wong believes that we are “in a phase of a cultural shift where our focus is moving to respecting ourselves as human beings; acting on and celebrating what makes us happy.” Indeed, the national dialogue about work-life balance—and doing what you love—has never been more urgent. It makes sense that yoga would be a part of that discussion.
“The practice teaches us to become aware of our lives, choices, actions and interactions. It’s a practice of connection,” says Wong. “What I love most about yoga is that it asks nothing of us—to be good, to be strong, to be certain. Rather it helps to create the space and appreciate to be who and wherever we are in our minds, bodies and lives.”
