Individually, these teachers and thought leaders are pioneers of their fields, doing the work and inspiring others to make this world a kinder, healthier, more peaceful place. Collectively, their influence is even stronger, providing us with a network of motivation that guides us toward our own True North. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Like the rest of us, these Mentors may find that certain yoga poses resonate more than others.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the power pose. You know the one.\u00a0The one that makes you feel big, open, and strong. The one you turn to when you need to build up confidence, or <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/feel-confident-uncertainty\/\">shake away the doubt<\/a>. So we asked some of our Mentors: What\u2019s your go-to power pose?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe power we cultivate on our mats\u2014and that we harness as we step into the world\u2014is of a much subtler and quieter variety than the cultural association of power,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/kathleen-engelhardt\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Kathleen Engelhardt<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who turns to forward folding poses when she needs to tune inward and seek humility and backward bending when she needs to open up and make space. \u201cI think of it as the power to simultaneously summon strength while softening to the sensations of the situation. In other, more poetic words, the holding of sacred ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Mentors we spoke with echoed this desire for holding space in their practice. \u201cMy power pose is a Low Lunge and Revolved Warrior,\u201d says yoga teacher <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/lindsay-havlicek-bell\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Lindsay Havlicek Bell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThey instantly make me feel awesome.\u201d For <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/nikki-vilella\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Nikki Vilella<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it&#8217;s Downward Dog. &#8222;It is hands-down the pose that makes me feel the most embodied.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/meg-mccraken\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Meg McCraken<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who teaches therapeutically-oriented yoga, practices Agni Sara daily \u201cto acknowledge, honor, collect, and direct my power in a clear and conscious way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We heard from many Mentors that inversions help them make space and feel strong in their sense of self. For yin yoga teacher <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/liza-dousson\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Liza Dousson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking Headstand \u201cdoesn\u2019t make me feel \u2018powerful\u2019 per se; it makes me feel whole and clears my mind, provides deep balance, perspective, and grounding\u2014that is what I find \u2018powerful\u2019 in my day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LA-based yoga teacher <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/vinnie-marino\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Vinnie Marino<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is all about Forearm Stand\u2014\u201cit focuses my mind,\u201d he says\u2014while <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/chris-loebsack\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Loebsack<\/a><\/b>\u2019s<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go-to is a Handstand. \u201cIt both picks me up and clamps me down,\u201d she says. \u201cI love it also because it didn&#8217;t come easy to me. I really had to work though old injuries with full-on mindful energy to do it in a sustainable fashion and safely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/magi-pierce\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Magi Pierce<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also turns to Handstand to feel powerful: \u201c\u201dIt simplifies my mind; it\u2019s about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dharana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (concentration) through my <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drishti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (eye gaze) and my breath,\u201d she says. \u201cI often use it before I teach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/basil-jones\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Basil Jones<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> couples inversions with arms balances. \u201cWhen I feel disconnected from my heart and my capacity to be open because of the violence or pain I see in the world, I know that I need to show up in my arm balancing to recharge my heart center,\u201d he says. \u201cCrow Pose and Handstands remind me to lift into myself physically, emotionally, and energetically. There&#8217;s no room to bullshit yourself when in an arm balance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arm balances also speak to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/bob-speck\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Bob Speck<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who names Peacock his power pose. \u201cIt&#8217;s powerful, yes, but it&#8217;s also all about balance. Life is often a see-saw, a balancing act. Hard and soft. Rigid and adaptable. Striving and accepting. Peacock allows me to put my hands on the Earth, feel power from my center, and find balance. Sometimes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another theme among our Mentors was chest openers, poses that crack us open and invite us to sit in the vulnerability. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/lauren-oconnell\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Lauren O&#8217;Connell<\/b><\/a>\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Camel Pose. \u201cIt grounds my lower body while opening solar plexus, heart, and throat chakra,\u201d she says. \u201cIt makes me feel radiant and powerful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/taylee-wilson\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Taylee Wilson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wild Thing has a similar effect: \u201cIt feels strong and open at the same time and is one of my absolute favorites,\u201d she says. \u201cI love to incorporate it into my home practice and my class flow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/jose-rivera\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Jose \u201cYoga Fool\u201d Rivera<\/b><\/a>\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> power pose, Warrior\u2019s Bridge, comes from the Budokon Primary Series, which is similar to Wild Thing. \u201cIt is a shoulders-stacked, side-body-strength pose. I like feeling the lateral lines of energy and shoulder stability as I lift up and hug in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another heart opener fan, SUP yoga teacher <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/katie-collins\/\" target=\"_blank\">Katie Collins<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequently turns to Wheel Pose while on her paddleboard. \u201cIt&#8217;s one of those poses on the water that truly needs ultimate stability and muscle integration. When done properly, it strengthens my postures on land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Mentors feel most powerful getting back to basics. \u201cI love the series of basic Sun Salutations,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/gina-murdock\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Gina Murdock<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIf I don&#8217;t have a lot of time I can do a few and it completely changes my body and mood. I feel stronger and more embodied.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/sally-sherman\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Sally Sherman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dials it in to one particular moment: \u201cMy power pose is Tadasana. It is my True North. It is the way our bodies were meant to stand\u2014strong, tall, proud. It is a powerful pose!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that the power pose isn\u2019t stagnant. Just as we as yogis change, so too does our practice. \u201cI think my power pose changes and varies throughout time, which I think is good since it opens me up to other types of changes in life,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/artist\/rachel-priest\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Rachel Priest<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her current power pose is Side Plank. \u201cSide plank teaches me great control and stability, and especially as I move through transitions with it, it makes me really stay focused and in the moment during my practice,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s really what a power pose is about: feeling connected and present in your practice.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s your power pose?
