Sugar addictions are alive and real, mostly because the sweet substance can be found in <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you don\u2019t have a sweet tooth, those zesty barbecue sauces or seemingly-innocent salad dressings are loaded with added sugars. It\u2019s no wonder that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/drhyman.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/04\/food-addiction-could-it-explain-why-70-percent-of-america-is-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\">the majority of Americans are addicted<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar addictions are believed to begin at an early age. One study from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/co-clinicalnutrition\/Abstract\/2011\/07000\/Innate_and_learned_preferences_for_sweet_taste.12.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illustrated that newborn babies are more likely to favor sweet things over other flavors. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/science\/0\/21835302\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could also be evolutionary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as children who favored high-calorie foods were more likely to survive when food sources were unreliable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that weren\u2019t enough, sugar makes us feel good.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Sugar fuels cells in <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/eat-smarter-nutrition-for-your-brain\/\">the brain<\/a>, leading our minds to think of it as a reward. The more sugar we eat, the more we increase the habit. A hormonal imbalance, PMS, or pregnancy can also lead to sugar and simple carbohydrate cravings, as it provides <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/why-you-snack-when-youre-sleepy\/\">a sense of relaxation<\/a> during times of anxiety and irritability. (Hence why your partner might bring you chocolate when Aunt Flo is making her monthly rounds.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that sugar highs are quick to dip into sugar lows, leaving us feeling shaky, depressed, and searching for more. We end up constantly craving the next fix, and these cravings can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/authoritynutrition.com\/10-disturbing-reasons-why-sugar-is-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead to weight gain, overload your liver, and elevate your insulin levels.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These issues are just triggers for further problems; once your insulin levels are up, you\u2019re more likely to develop cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Suddenly Little Debbie doesn\u2019t look so innocent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are ways you can start to rid yourself of a sugar addiction! And while the first few days might not be fun, the end results will be well worth it. Many report the benefits of breaking sugar addiction to include things like\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/authoritynutrition.com\/10-disturbing-reasons-why-sugar-is-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\">clearer skin, weight loss, increased energy, and better sleep patterns<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below we\u2019ve assembled a few tips to get you started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Avoid Processed Foods<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just chalk up sugar addiction as another reason to avoid anything with a laundry list of ingredients. Processed foods are one of the biggest culprits for secret sugars, and you\u2019ll likely be better off eliminating them from your diet altogether. Even things that don\u2019t necessarily taste sweet, like potato chips and white bread, can affect your insulin levels. Try subbing your midday snacks and meals for whole foods like oats, hummus and veggies, and beans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Favor Fiber<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If sugar is Voldemort, than fiber is Harry Potter. Fiber helps fight the sugar cravings by keeping you full and providing energy without raising your blood sugar. A protein and fiber combo will keep you satiated and prevent any hungry crashes from disrupting your day. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Keep Your Blood Sugar Stable<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have sensitive blood sugar, you might notice that you&#8217;re crankier when you\u2019ve gone a few hours without eating. This feeling leads you reaching for feel-good foods, such as cookies, sugary cereals, and high-starch snacks. A better option is to eat small healthy meals throughout the day, making sure to balance your carb and protein intake. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Search for New Ways to Get Your Serotonin<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We like sugar because we like serotonin, also known as the \u201chappiness hormone.\u201d But you can get your serotonin boost without the Sour Patch Kids. Try upping your vitamin B6, getting outside, changing up your exercise routine, eating foods that aid digestion, and avoiding stressful situations. <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/10-steps-to-self-love-success\/\">Self care<\/a> is of the upmost importance when fighting sugar addictions. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Limit Fruit (For Now!)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest questions that come up when dealing with sugar addiction is how to handle fruit. Many fruits are loaded with sugar, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/authoritynutrition.com\/is-fruit-good-or-bad-for-your-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they\u2019re also filled with fiber and water.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This makes it take longer to digest, so that the fructose hits your liver slowly and you stay full for longer. That being said, when you\u2019re trying to break a sugar addiction, you\u2019ll want to limit your fruits in order to avoid craving more sweet things.
