It&#8217;s a time of rebirth: Seeds sprout, flowers bloom, we begin again. We naturally sense an opportunity for a fresh start as we move out of the cold and dark of the winter into the bright, rejuvenating promise of spring. The season is a time for transition and moves fluidly, promoting kapha (moisture) and pitta (warmth) in our systems. The pace of spring tends to feel slower than summer or fall, and our bodies and mind will naturally begin to shed. We might crave lighter foods, feel a need to clean out our closets, start a cleanse, or embark on a retreat to hit the reset button.<\/p>\n<p>It is also common for the spring season to be associated with colds,\u00a0congestion, hay fever, and allergies.\u00a0As we emerge from\u00a0hibernation into the sunlight, we create water and fire in our system.\u00a0Too much water combined with excess Earth (kapha) leaves us\u00a0feeling heavy and full of toxins. Too much fire and we\u00a0overheat, causing allergies flare up. Too\u00a0much fire and water at the same time leaves our bodies taxed,\u00a0inflamed, and congested (think sinus headache).<\/p>\n<p>Spring is associate with\u00a0our liver and gallbladder, which are ruled by pitta. These are our main organs for cleansing and processing toxins. Using\u00a0Ayurvedic principles, we can learn how to flow with the changes of\u00a0nature and create balance so we have a healthy glow year-round. Staying balanced in the spring can support our creativity,\u00a0and motivation while increasing our ability to let go and\u00a0flow.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few easy ways to infuse principles of Ayurveda into your life this season.<\/p>\n<h3>Embrace a Healthy Spring Diet<\/h3>\n<p>You might notice a natural but distinct shift in your craving as\u00a0winter gives way to spring.\u00a0The arrival of the warmer weather\u00a0often marks a decline in desire for the heavy foods you craved during\u00a0winter months. Your appetite may decrease\u00a0and you may find yourself craving fruit, fresh vegetables, and\u00a0salads.\u00a0This is your body\u2019s way of telling you that it\u2019s time for\u00a0some spring-cleaning.\u00a0In fact, spring is a perfect time of year <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/springtime-ayurvedic-cleanse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for\u00a0a\u00a0cleanse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can support your body\u2019s natural desire to purify by favoring\u00a0the pungent (apples, cranberries), bitter (dark leafy greens), and\u00a0astringent (lemon) tastes and by eating warm, light foods that are\u00a0relatively easy to digest. You can further support the process by\u00a0drinking room-temperature, warm, or hot beverages. Drink tea\u00a0made with cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger one hour after\u00a0breakfast and lunch. This is beneficial to your digestive and\u00a0circulatory systems and helps rid excess mucus. Eliminate foods\u00a0that increase kapha, like dairy products, iced or cold drinks, and\u00a0fried or oily food. Increase your intake of water and alkaline foods\u00a0like <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/our-top-ten-picks-for-spring-produce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green veggies, fruits<\/a>, whole grains, olive oil and avocados.<\/p>\n<p>Bitter veggies like arugula, mustard greens, and dandelion greens\u00a0support the liver and gallbladder and help to cleanse the system.<\/p>\n<h3>Relax and Play!<\/h3>\n<p>Embrace the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wanderlust.com\/om-out-and-play\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">light-heartedness<\/a> that springtime tends to bring\u00a0about.\u00a0Spring is a natural time to socialize and enjoy friends and\u00a0loved ones, also a great time to fall in love. Hormones are usually\u00a0high during this time of year and it\u2019s not just the trees and flowers\u00a0beginning to bloom! We, too, are budding from the inside and it\u2019s\u00a0actually recommended to slightly increase your sexual activity\u00a0during this time. Embrace a sense of playfulness and adventure\u00a0and give your wild side some outlets for expression. Try\u00a0something new, <a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/true-yogi-fashion-just-be-yourself\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wear bright colors<\/a>, and be open to whatever shows up.<\/p>\n<p>As winter recedes, try to rise early and take advantage of the longer,\u00a0brighter days.\u00a0Try to create a stimulating and inspiring morning\u00a0routine for yourself, even if the routine is simple. Yoga, exercise, and\u00a0pranayama are great for promoting clarity and lightness. Try\u00a0stepping up the intensity of your yoga practice and exercise routine\u00a0to clear out toxins and stimulate your metabolism. Pranayama is\u00a0especially helpful to remove toxins stimulating clarity and\u00a0lightness. If your nose is clogged from allergies, try using a neti-pot and a steam. Saunas are great for drying out excess moisture in\u00a0the body and are excellent for removing inflammation too. Increase\u00a0your water intake and stay hydrated.<\/p>\n<h3>Declutter and Simplify<\/h3>\n<p>When our bodies are clean, it is easier to clear out clutter in the\u00a0mind. This is much easier to do when our home\u2014our physical space\u2014is uncluttered. Get new plants and increase the amount\u00a0of fresh green things in your living space. Create space in your home and life. When we clear the space around us, we\u00a0make space for the new.<\/p>\n<p>Just as we create room in our physical space, it&#8217;s a good idea to create space in our schedules.\u00a0Let the agenda go and slow down. <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/why-im-quitting-and-you-should-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simplify your life<\/a>\u00a0by including those people and things that truly revitalize your body and soul.\u00a0 Spring is a time of renewal, so let yourself do nothing and soak up the\u00a0quietness. Make the space for new ideas and inspiration to emerge.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever changes you decide to make (even if they\u2019re minor), commit to sticking with them. Successful transformation rarely\u00a0happens with a quick fix or a brief burst of dedication. Look for small shifts each day.<\/p>\n<h3>Tune in to Nature<\/h3>\n<p>Beauty is everywhere in springtime\u2014renewal is literally\u00a0sprouting from the ground. The natural world is going through a\u00a0rebirth, so be creative and forge a connection to this\u00a0transformational process. Spend some time outside and notice the silence.\u00a0Slow down to examine the buds and smell the roses. Allow spring to fill you up with inspiration, energy,\u00a0and light.<\/p>\n<p>Be steady with whatever shift you are inviting into your life and remember that deep change happens slowly.
