Even if your personal sex life is as vanilla as it gets, there\u2019s no denying that when it comes (pun intended) to matters of the heart and the groin, we\u2019re all a little Rocky Road. Of course, there are ways to mitigate this, mindfully, and bring some simplicity back into the bedroom. We sat down with sex therapist, author, and host of the long-running podcast, <a href=\"http:\/\/sexwithemily.com\/category\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sex with Emily<\/a>, Dr. Emily Morse, and her assistant and equally brazen COO of Chick Flick Productions for some hot\u2014and we do mean hot\u2014tips. Grab your partner\u2014or your rose quartz wand\u2014and watch on. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Communication as Lubrication<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SqgE-Ig7EWk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all heard it, but when it comes to sex, the importance of establishing and encouraging empathetic lines of communication is paramount. This is two-fold: Not only is it important to give your sexual partner the space they need to express what they want and how they want it, it\u2019s also about prioritizing candid conversations about your sex life. The more often you do this, the more comfortable it gets. And the more fun you then have. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust know that it\u2019s OK to feel awkward,\u201d says Emily. \u201cEverytime we try something new\u2014even if it\u2019s just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/heart-communication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about sex (a lot of us don\u2019t even have sex education!)\u2014it\u2019s best to do it when you\u2019re not in the bedroom. When you\u2019re having a sex conversation, be in a neutral situation to have a talk. No shame, no blame, just a talk.\u201d She suggests naming three things you both would like to try as a way to break the ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Mindful Masturbation<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mwwZwyTBLHY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-love is certainly having a \u201cmoment\u201d in the wellness community right now, and loving yourself sexually is no exception. (One needs to look only to the proliferation of aforementioned <a href=\"https:\/\/goddesswands.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crystal love wands<\/a> for proof!) And while there are certainly myriad personal benefits to a healthy masturbation practice, it\u2019s also the best way to learn what you like, in order to communicate that to your partner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily says masturbation shouldn\u2019t be just a \u201chit it and quit it\u201d exercise, and suggests employing all the senses when masturbating. \u201cI like to light a candle, put on my favorite playlist, I make sure that I don\u2019t go right for the hotspots, but teasing myself and finding out what really feels good. We have a lot of untapped erogenous zones on our body.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Foreplay is a Requirement<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/79xt-eFn2tQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t go straight into a PhD program from kindergarten, or complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/why-we-run-lessons-marathon-finish-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marathon<\/a> after spending six months on the couch. Why then, in such an important area of life, do we tend to skip the participation? Foreplay, says Emily, needs to be considered a requirement in a healthy sex life. It\u2019s a non-negotiable negotiation that allows you and your partner to not only ensure you\u2019re on the same page, but that you\u2019re speaking the same language. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen couples disregard foreplay&#8230; they can have sex, but they don\u2019t feel connected or intimate,\u201d says Emily. \u201cThere\u2019s a huge sexual sandbox, and when we go straight from foreplay to sex, it does a disservice to everybody. Couples who can kind of look at it like, \u2018Oh! Foreplay <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sex; sex <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> foreplay,\u2019 they\u2019ll feel much more connected to each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Renowned sex therapist and host of the popular podcast &#8220;Sex With Emily&#8221;
