It can feel impossible to take a moment and\u00a0connect with yourself while\u00a0running from home, to the office, to dinner, and back again. Fear not: There are ways to take a moment, slow down,\u00a0and find\u00a0your center amid the chaos\u2014the best way is to simply take a conscious breath. Essentials oils enhance this process.<\/p>\n<p>Essential oils have been used for centuries for\u00a0beauty, health, and wellness, as well as in spiritual practice. Extracted from plants, pure essential oils are distilled, harboring the purest form of the plant from which it is derived (for instance, sandalwood or eucalyptus). You may be familiar with some of the more well-known benefits of oils: Chamomile calms us, patchouli grounds us. Capturing the essence of these plants and flowers, essential oils not only smell good\u2014they do good, too:\u00a0When used in conjunction with therapies and exercises, essential oils can help\u00a0us to reconnect to our bodies and <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/know-your-chakras-open-balance-energy-center-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our\u00a0chakras.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Essential Oils: Tools for an Enhanced Experience<\/h3>\n<p>Guy Vincent, Head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aveda.com\/living-aveda\/pure-fume-aroma\">Aveda Pure-Fume\u2122 Aroma<\/a>, has an expert understanding of aromatherapy, scents, and essential oils. Fascinated by herbal and alternative medicine, Vincent was drawn to study aromatherapy. His background in brewing and winemaking\u00a0made him\u00a0particularly interested in the\u00a0chemistry of essential oils and how they blended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;d always been into health and wellbeing,&#8221; he says, &#8220;so I went off and studied alternative medicine.\u201d He described taking a class in aromatherapy as a \u201creal eureka moment,\u201d thinking, \u201cwow, here&#8217;s this modality that smells great, and is good for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While scientific research on essential oils and corresponding therapies is limited, according to\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/ireport.cnn.com\/docs\/DOC-1134608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN iReport<\/a><\/em>\u00a0scientists are exploring expanded uses of aromatherapy. It has been said that essential oils can elicit both <a href=\"http:\/\/ireport.cnn.com\/docs\/DOC-1134608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psychological<\/a> and physiological responses from the body through practices such as <a href=\"http:\/\/ireport.cnn.com\/docs\/DOC-1118511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aromatherapy<\/a>\u00a0and massage therapy. Researchers at the Wesleyan University in Connecticut, for example, found that the scent\u00a0of lavender increased deep, restful sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Zollicoffer, Aveda&#8217;s Director of Professional Spa Education, says that\u00a0when you&#8217;re inhaling essential oil aromas they can trigger reactions in two ways.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just by simply smelling you have two reactions,&#8221; says Zollicoffer. &#8220;One is psychological\u2014how you individually connect to that aroma based on all the memories and associations you may or may not have. And then you also have a physiological reaction\u2014how it really changes you in the body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-56436\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/KH50382-768x513.jpg\" alt=\"_KH50382\" width=\"768\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/KH50382-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/KH50382-992x662.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Connecting to Ourselves With Essential Oils<\/h3>\n<p>When Vincent selects\u00a0essential oils for Aveda products, his\u00a0goal is to create something that can evoke true memories and true moods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A\u00a0lot of smells are associations,\u201d he says\u2014they&#8217;re\u00a0often linked to a memory, a feeling, or an <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/the-power-of-negative-emotions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emotion<\/a>. Vincent\u00a0works to understand what each specific\u00a0product needs, considering\u00a0the effect it will have, while also assuring that the end result is blended for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe consider the aromas to be a really key part of the formula that functions more than just pretty smells,&#8221; he says. &#8220;[Aromas] have\u00a0a deeper effect and function in the product, whether the product needs to be reassuring, calming, uplifting, energizing, modern, new, or retrospective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zollicoffer is also a massage therapist, and always uses essential oils in his treatments, including the Aveda Chakra Balancing Massage. Rather than focusing on the more &#8220;magical&#8221; aspects of massage and aromatherapy, however, Zollicoffer is a realist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople talk about out of body experiences,&#8221; he says. &#8220;To me, the real question is how do you have an in-body experience?\u201d Many of us live in our thoughts not in our bodies; by combining a full sensory experience, complete with a massage, essential oils, and seed sounds, people will ultimately be able to connect with their chakras, and tune into their bodies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When used in conjunction with therapies and exercises, essential oils can allow us to reconnect to our bodies and chakras.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By eliminating the jargon we so often hear with chakras (balanced, imbalanced, open, closed) Zollicoffer says\u00a0that we&#8217;re able to focus on <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/claudine-honza-lafond-conscious-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connection<\/a>. Chakras may seem like\u00a0an elusive concept\u2014though\u00a0you&#8217;re probably more aware of them than you realize. When you use terms like heartbroken, what you&#8217;re really saying is \u201cheart chakra.\u201d As Zollicoffer says, \u201cthey&#8217;re the same thing, just a different language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, you can&#8217;t necessarily just grab some\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aveda.com\/product\/5228\/17266\/Collections\/ChakraTM\/Chakra-4-Balancing-Body-Mist\/index.tmpl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chakra 4 Balancing Body Mist<\/a> off the shelf and expect to be instantly balanced. \u201cThe aroma can help you; the aroma is designed to help you connect to that center. You still have to do all the work necessary to process whatever it is your processing.\u201d Zollicoffer explains. \u201cOnce you&#8217;re grounded in your body again, you can start to process and feel what you&#8217;re feeling. As you start to feel what you&#8217;re feeling, you start to move through it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a newcomer to the world of essential oils looking to improve your wellbeing and personal growth, don&#8217;t be intimidated by the breadth of options and information. It&#8217;s all about connection to self, presence, and body awareness.
