According to Susan Wickstrand, a.k.a. the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/inspiration-from-the-queen-of-collage\/\" target=\"_blank\">Queen of Collage<\/a>,\u201d the answer has everything to do with \u201cthe entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through collage, Wickstrand\u00a0can create something deeply personal to channel her passions for travel, world cultures, surfing, and nature. By fashioning artwork from intimate objects and outward journeys, an individual story can merge with a theme or thought to share with the entire universe. \u201cWhat we have in our surroundings, how we live and how we work are important to our psyche and well-being,\u201d\u00a0she says. &#8220;Collage is taking those things that you have around you and <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/painting-with-light\/\" target=\"_blank\">putting it into art<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best of all, collage is art for the people; it\u2019s a visual expression that anyone can create with their own aesthetic.\u00a0Here&#8217;s how to get started making your own.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38642\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ShaveIceHi-Res-e14491909295651.jpg\" alt=\"ShaveIceHi-Res\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Project: A Collage of Intention<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s Not a Vision Board\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Susan suggests creating a collage that contains a mantra or intention. It could be a theme such as self-love, courage, or expansion (for example, if this is the year you want to take a <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlusthollywood.com\/upcoming-trainings\" target=\"_blank\">yoga teacher training<\/a> or try a volunteer vacation). But remember, collage is a very different than creating a <a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/the-day-i-diy-d-vision-board-for-your-soul\" target=\"_blank\">vision board<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s like the difference between writing a novel and poem,\u201d says Wickstrand. \u201cWith collage we\u2019re creating key elements, and there is a lot of editing. It\u2019s getting down to the core: Being succinct and filtering down to the key images.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All supply items can be purchased from a local art or craft supply store. Here&#8217;s what you&#8217;ll need to get started:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A piece of wood or gesso board for your foundation<\/li>\n<li>Glue stick for mounting your found objects<\/li>\n<li>Mod Podge, for an acrylic sheen to coat your final product<\/li>\n<li>Watercolor paints and textile samples (optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38643\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/JustLove-e14491909093171.jpg\" alt=\"JustLove\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Collecting Your Items<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think a good life doesn\u2019t happen by accident. It takes a lot of planning, and so does a collage.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most important part of your collage will be the objects you collect to include. Wickstrand\u00a0encourages you to take your time with this process. A great place to start is with anything paper-based: Photographs from your phone, postcards, and mementos from favorite places. You can also add textile swatches (an old flannel scrap, for instance, or something from a craft store).<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the object, take it to heart to create something <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/benefits-meaningful-mentor-relationship\/\" target=\"_blank\">meaningful<\/a> for you. \u201cThe more different avenues that [objects are]\u00a0coming from, the more interesting,\u201d says Wickstrand. &#8220;It\u2019s not something to be Photoshopped. This is a low-technology project. It\u2019s about having fun, and playing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38644\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Diamond-head-dreams-copy-e14491899714331.jpg\" alt=\"Diamond head dreams copy\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The Creation<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u201cAll things are created twice: You create in your mind and how you manifest, good or bad.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A collage artist&#8217;s assembly of objects needs to be just as intentional as the selection. \u201cFirst takes notes, think about what you want to create,&#8221; Wickstrand\u00a0says. \u201cPlay with the images; editing them down, laying them out, and layering as desired. I will ask students questions about images: What is the strongest? It\u2019s about being really mindful about placement.&#8221; One strong image is more powerful than several.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly process is also the time when Susan lets go and allows intuition to take over, trusting what works well aesthetically and allowing the joy of play and creation to come through.<\/p>\n<p>After you glue and affix your items to your base (using wood or the gesso board), you can also paint or write on top using ink or watercolors. Once dried, apply Mod Podge for an acrylic sheen.
