{"id":33077,"date":"2015-09-23T18:00:46","date_gmt":"2015-09-23T22:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=33077"},"modified":"2015-12-01T16:20:14","modified_gmt":"2015-12-01T21:20:14","slug":"a-simple-sutra-for-tackling-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/ko\/journal\/a-simple-sutra-for-tackling-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"A Simple Sutra for Tackling Anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post originally appeared on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fivetattvas.com\/blog\/2015\/8\/12\/peace-through-communication-a-simple-sutra-for-tackling-anxiety\" target=\"_blank\">Five Tattvas<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not the first yogi who has suffered from anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a thing that brings many of us together; we cannot achieve quiet in our minds, so instead we seek <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/surrendering-flow-mat-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">peace on the mat<\/a>. After getting to know my fellow yogis, it\u2019s clear that in many cases a regular\u00a0practice has provided\u00a0a great deal of assistance in dealing with mental disorders. That being said, the\u00a0work is never over.\u00a0There are still those mornings when we roll out of\u00a0the sheets, look at our to-do lists, and fall back into the pit of fear.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, we are not alone. Social media, traffic jams, and solo nights of slumber\u00a0can all contribute to\u00a0a sense of isolation, but I find that the feelings we experience (fear, dissatisfaction, stress)\u00a0are common.\u00a0Ironically, a great deal of that\u00a0anxiety is provoked by our experiences in relation to others. Whether we are experiencing jealousy, anger, or frustration, our <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/how-to-reach-inner-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\">inner peace<\/a> is greatly affected by\u00a0how we communicate with others.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there\u2019s a sutra to help us through it:<\/p>\n<p><em>maitri karuna muditopeksanam sukha dukha punyapunya visayanam bhavanatas citta prasadanam\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By cultivating attitudes of friendliness towards the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and disregard toward the wicked, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1443035999043_612\">Regardless of where we\u00a0are in our lives, this sutra, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1938477073\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1938477073&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wanderlustcom-20&amp;linkId=BXPJAF23RQFCFCOI\" target=\"_blank\"><em id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1443035999043_611\">The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali<\/em><\/a>, can be very helpful in achieving a peaceful mind. It\u2019s broken down into four simple parts\u00a0and speaks specifically to instances in which we are interacting with others.\u00a0The four parts, or locks, consist of the <em>sukha<\/em>, <em>dukha<\/em>, <em>punya<\/em>, and <em>apunya<\/em>:<em>\u00a0<\/em>happy people, unhappy people, virtuous people, and the wicked.\u00a0In the yoga sutras, Sri Swami Satchidananda suggests that we can always fit any person into one of these categories, making their daily application practical and true.<\/p>\n<h3>1. The Sukha (Happy People)<\/h3>\n<p>As silly as it may sound, witnessing the happiness of others is a huge culprit in creating anxiety. Have you ever had a friend experience something wonderful, such as an engagement\u00a0or a job promotion? Maybe they have more money than you\u00a0and are able to afford South African safaris\u00a0while you\u2019re struggling for a night off to go to happy hour. Witnessing happiness in others can create envy, which can lead to the anxious question, \u201cWhy don\u2019t I have that?\u201d Don\u2019t get mad at yourself if you feel this way. It\u2019s really,<em> really <\/em>common.<\/p>\n<p>To combat the feeling, Satchidananda suggests to practice friendliness and optimism. Think, \u201cI am glad for this person\u2019s happiness. I am comfortable and happy for my own reasons, and I know that I am on a unique path.\u201d When we share in the joy of others, we tend to feel less anxiety\u00a0and more compassion. It creates a \u201cwe\u2019re all in this together\u201d sort of feeling, which can spread like wildfire.<\/p>\n<h3>2. The Dukha (Unhappy People)<\/h3>\n<p>Everyone has his or her dark days. When you witness others going through a troublesome time, use this as an opportunity to practice empathy and compassion.<\/p>\n<p>It can be tempting to take pleasure in the suffering of others, especially when this person is someone you may feel rivalry towards. Rather than experience quiet joy in their pain, try to help them in whatever way will best serve their growth and journey towards happiness.\u00a0If what they need is time alone, give them that. Maybe they simply need an ear or a sounding board, or a small reminder that things will get better. This not only helps the other person restore faith, but it also helps to retain the inner peace in your own mind.<\/p>\n<h3>3. The Punya (Virtuous People)<\/h3>\n<p>A virtuous person can be\u00a0your friend who recently started a successful nonprofit, a compassionate mother, or any other individual reflecting qualities that you admire.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/dont-let-anything-dull-your-sparkle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anxiety<\/a> may arise in moments like this when that pesky inner critic shows up, saying something like, \u201cYou\u2019ll never be as good as them.\u201d How annoying and untrue. It\u2019s possible for all of us to be virtuous\u00a0once we reclaim some inner peace.<\/p>\n<p>When dealing with virtuous people, Satchidananda suggests practicing delight, or celebrating the noble tasks they\u2019ve accomplished.\u00a0Rather than fall into the pit of envy, use their behavior as motivation to increase the generosity in your own actions.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1443035999043_638\">4. The Apunya (Wicked People)<\/h3>\n<p>It would be wonderful if we all lived together in one blissful bubble, but that\u2019s not the case. Drivers cut one another off and people sometimes say things to intentionally hurt others.\u00a0It happens.<\/p>\n<p>In these moments, in order to maintain a peaceful mind, it is important that we approach the situation carefully. Rather than express anger to another\u2019s actions, try to encourage a sense of empathy. Maybe this wicked person is experiencing severe pain, causing them to act out and project their negative feelings. We may never know the full story because we only live in our own minds.\u00a0Satchidananda suggests approaching these situations with indifference, as this does not further disturb the wicked and allows you to maintain your inner peace.<\/p>\n<p>We all want that inner peace. While the <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/the-inward-journey-to-inner-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\">journey to enlightenment<\/a> may seem like a personal endeavor,\u00a0everyday human interactions can\u00a0directly impact your quality of mind. Always take a deep <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/uncover-the-mystery-of-ujjayi-breath\/\" target=\"_blank\">breath<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Restoring (and maintaining)\u00a0a sense of peace within our minds is the key to acting justly and kindly. With a calm sense of spirit, we are able to provide for others with the upmost level of clarity and care.
