{"id":308336,"date":"2022-01-02T10:12:40","date_gmt":"2022-01-02T15:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=308336"},"modified":"2023-01-31T12:54:45","modified_gmt":"2023-01-31T17:54:45","slug":"how-to-make-your-new-habits-stick-2-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/ko\/journal\/how-to-make-your-new-habits-stick-2-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Your New Habits Stick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever noticed that when you ask someone about their New Year\u2019s resolutions, you typically get one of two responses:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019m hoping to lose 12 pounds and stop procrastinating and call my mom more and spend more time reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can basically fill in the blanks with any sort of ambition towards self-improvement. Or they say something like:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I don\u2019t make New Year\u2019s resolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what makes a person more apt to want to create personal change and why do others so quickly shy away from it? Most often, those who fall in the latter group of ignoring the tradition of resolutions admit that sticking to resolutions is often too difficult, so they just don\u2019t bother. It\u2019s the whole gym-membership-in-January phenomenon. On the first of the month, every treadmill is taken, occupied by a blaze of colorful new workout gear, water bottles, and determination to get fit. Come February, it\u2019s a ghost town.<\/p>\n<p>Why can\u2019t we make these new <a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/12-habits-of-healthy-happy-people-who-dont-give-a-sht-about-your-inner-peace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">habits<\/a> stick?<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, if you live anywhere where the weather gets cold, slogging off to Pilates through sleet and snow sounds a whole lot less appealing than a <em>Maid<\/em>\u00a0Netflix binge. But more than weather-related discouragement, the truth is it can be pretty easy to write off change that seems daunting. Saying we\u2019re going to become someone different means we actually have to do something differently. And <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/say-yes-to-life-the-power-of-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying <em>yes<\/em><\/a> to something new is often frightening because we have to face what\u2019s already failed and approach the possibility that we might fail all over again. Bottom line, new habits are hard to form without self-imposed discipline or the encouragement of others. And probably what we all really need is some of each.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.&#8221; \u2013\u00a0Meister Eckhart<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m typically the type of person to set <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/why-you-should-keep-your-goals-to-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goals<\/a> for the year ahead. For me, it feels good to sit down and really think about what I want to happen. I enjoy thinking about how far I\u2019ve come and how far I still have to go. But just because I like to set goals doesn\u2019t mean I always meet them. I\u2019m an expert planner. I\u2019m only so-so at execution. Why? Here are some examples of my goals for 2022:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Only say <em>yes<\/em> if you really mean it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Only <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/why-im-quitting-and-you-should-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say <em>no<\/em><\/a> if you really mean it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Be (a little) less of a hater.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Open a Roth IRA (adulthood!).<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Don\u2019t take it personally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The small:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Take better care of my hands.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Eat less dairy.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Have longer mornings.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do one less thing.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/3-herbal-tea-recipes-to-boost-your-immune-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drink more tea<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While some of these were pretty easy to check off my list (I opened a retirement fund!), others were more challenging to put into daily practice. I didn\u2019t always stand my ground when it came to the yes-or-no and I had my fair share of cheese this year. I didn\u2019t always take something off my to-do list that could wait and I have half a dozen half-used bottles of cuticle oil in my nightstand drawer.<\/p>\n<p>But rather than taking my missteps as a reason to completely give up, I choose something else: To not feel bad about any of the times I didn\u2019t 100 percent succeed. Why? Because I know <em>I tried<\/em>. I kept these goals in mind and I strived toward them. I fell short, a lot. Other times I made strides that still left me feeling pretty pleased with my accomplishments. And the majority of my goals made me accountable to myself, so when I <a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/how-your-body-can-change-your-emotional-habits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed<\/a>, I only let myself down (not saying that shortcomings are no big deal when you don\u2019t have to answer to anyone, but it makes it easier to use it as opportunity to reflect, regroup, and get back on your feet).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am a firm believer that every few years one needs to shake one\u2019s life through a sieve, like a miner in the Yukon. The gold nuggets remain. The rest falls through like the soft earth it is.&#8221; \u2013 Amy Poehler<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sometimes you shrug off the cashier who was rude to you and sometimes you don\u2019t. Sometimes you find yourself 15 minutes early patiently waiting for your name to be called, and other times you find yourself rushing out the door, late for yet <em>another<\/em> appointment. Sometimes you have a long, relaxing morning, reading, thinking. Sometimes it\u2019s all you can do not to pour that fourth cup of coffee and count down the minutes to when you can go back to bed. It\u2019s all part of how we learn.<\/p>\n<p>So how can we try to meet our expectations without losing our heads?<\/p>\n<p>Attach <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/are-you-ready-to-change-for-the-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new habits<\/a> to existing ones. An example: Around this time last year I wanted to start <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/why-you-shouldnt-give-up-on-meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meditating<\/a> daily but I couldn\u2019t figure out how to incorporate this new practice into my daily routine. So I thought about when I wanted to meditate: First thing in the morning. And I thought about the first thing I already did every morning: Drink a cup of water. I\u2019ve done that for so long that it doesn\u2019t even feel like something I have to think about anymore. I just do it. So I tried to make a connection: Water + meditation = suddenly a new habit was formed.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t frame it as failure. See above.*<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">*But seriously, sometimes pizza is better than kale and sometimes staying up late to have a conversation with an old friend is more important than getting eight hours of sleep. Just because we don\u2019t do what we mean to every time doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019ve screwed up beyond repair. It means we\u2019re human. As such, we\u2019re incredibly flexible and capable of bouncing back.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat yourself. Just because you couldn\u2019t make a habit stick one year doesn\u2019t mean it won\u2019t ever happen. So if you aren\u2019t happy with the progress (or lack of progress) you\u2019ve made on a certain goal, try it again. Who knows, maybe 2023 will be the year of the healthy cuticle and a perpetually minimalist to-do list.<\/p>\n<p><em>This piece was originally written by\u00a0<a
