A new study published in March in the journal <em><a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/article\/10.3389\/fnhum.2016.00117\/full?version=meter+at+0&amp;module=meter-Links&amp;pgtype=Blogs&amp;contentId=&amp;mediaId=%25%25ADID%25%25&amp;referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwell.blogs.nytimes.com%2F&amp;priority=true&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=meter-links-click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frontiers in Human Neuroscience<\/a><\/em>\u00a0suggests that changing just one old\u00a0habit at a time might be an outmoded way of thinking.\u00a0For those of us whom\u00a0embark on the journey toward bettering ourselves, it is often recommended that the path toward well-being should be\u00a0approached by adopting one new habit at a time to create lasting change.<\/p>\n<p>Scientific studies typically (though not always)\u00a0hypothesize and test this by studying the cause and effect of one practice at a time (For example: How meditation <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/mindfulness-can-treat-recurring-depression-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helps treat\u00a0chronic depression<\/a>), because it is much more straightforward\u00a0to analyze data and come to conclusions when just one new element is introduced to the equation.<\/p>\n<p>But researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara wondered if this tried-and-true mentality\u2014when put to the test is indeed effective\u2014was slowing our progress overall. They decided to find out whether or not a complete lifestyle overhaul had a\u00a0greater impact\u00a0on health and well-being, and if in the end it was better to give up every bad habit at once, instead of tacking them piecemeal.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers assembled\u00a031 college students\u00a0with\u00a0flexible daily schedules, and put them through a series of physical, cognitive, and emotional tests. Before the experiment began, brain scans were conducted on each student. Next, they were divided into two groups: the first was a control group that continued their routines as usual, and the other group underwent a total lifestyle overhaul. For the next six weeks, the lifestyle overhaul group spent each morning stretching for an hour, followed by <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/how-lifting-weights-can-make-you-smarter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strength and resistance training<\/a>, balancing exercises, and then an hour of mindfulness-based training which included stress reduction techniques like meditation. But that&#8217;s not all\u2014in the afternoon, the\u00a0group\u00a0exercised again for another 90 minutes, and also completed endurance workouts twice a week. They received nutrition consulting and kept a daily journal of their exercise and diet, while also tracking their sleep cycles and mood levels.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the experiment the students\u00a0were retested.\u00a0It should be of no surprise that the control group did not change. However, the group that underwent the total lifestyle overhaul were substantially fitter, happier, and more productive. Their <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/new-research-shows-how-meditation-rewires-the-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brainpower received a big boost<\/a>; cognitive function,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/meditation-improves-memory-in-young-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memory, and focus improved<\/a>,\u00a0and they had greater sense of self-confidence.<\/p>\n<p><em>The New York Times <a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/12\/out-with-the-old\/?module=meter-Links&amp;version=meter+at+0&amp;contentCollection=meter-links-click&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Blogs&amp;region=Body&amp;contentId=&amp;mediaId=%25%25ADID%25%25&amp;referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&amp;priority=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WELL blog<\/a><\/em> has more:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>These improvements, especially on measures of mood and stress reduction, generally exceeded by a great deal what had been seen in many past experiments whose subjects altered only one behavior. The study\u2019s authors suggest that one kind of change, like starting an exercise regimen, may amplify the effects of another, like taking up meditation. What\u2019s more, the improvements persisted: According to Michael Mrazek, the director of research at the Center for Mindfulness &amp; Human Potential at U.C.S.B. and the study\u2019s lead author, another set of tests six weeks after the experiment\u2019s end showed that the change-everything students still scored much higher than they originally had on measures of fitness, mood, thinking skills and well-being, even though none of them were still exercising or meditating as much as they did during the experiment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is all well and good but let&#8217;s be real\u2014is a total lifestyle change really feasible for the average working adult? Maybe so! Profound results like these\u2014in such a short period of time, no less\u2014are quite encouraging. Sure, it may seem daunting if not impossible to change EVERYTHING all at once, but knowing that in just six weeks it&#8217;s possible to\u00a0look, feel, and live better than ever before is some serious motivation. Of course there is nothing wrong with\u00a0replacing one bad habit\u00a0at a time with a healthy one, but\u00a0why not try making two changes&#8230; or three&#8230; or four? Think of it as\u00a0just\u00a0a six-week commitment to see if it&#8217;s working and then reassess.
