Plenty of studies back that up\u2014according to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2016\/12\/optistic-women-live-longer-are-healthier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one recent Harvard study<\/a>, women who were optimistic actually lived longer than those who were less-so. We see less dramatic examples of this on the mat all the time. For me, it was Chair Pose. I used to grimace when it was called, thinking somehow that the teacher would realize my discontent and change up the flow. Years of unanswered grimaces caused me to hate the pose with even more veracity than with which I began. And then one teacher randomly made me laugh while in it, acknowledging how horrid the pose could be. As soon as I smiled, it magically became easier. I\u2019ve smiled in every <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/yoga-pose-breakdown-chair-pose-utkatasana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chair Pose<\/a> since, and I no longer dread it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is so much synergy between how we hold ourselves, and the energy that we have in every single walk of life,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/milts1\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Milton<\/a>, fitness trainer and former Australian National Rugby League player. The same can be said in fitness. When we approach our practice with positivity\u2014whatever it may be, even if it extends beyond our comfort zone\u2014we learn how not only to accept challenges that scare us, but also, just how capable we really are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many people will go into fitness, regarding the health, regarding their body, being confused in the process,\u201d says Luke. \u201cMy job is to reinforce common sense back into the industry, because if you&#8217;re good at something, you can be good at everything. It&#8217;s a learned skill.\u201d It\u2019s this way of thinking that allows even the most ardent detractor of Chair Pose to learn to love it. When we approach physical challenge in our practice with the positive outlook that we can overcome the negative voice inside that says \u201cwe can\u2019t,\u201d we set a tone\u2014not only for class, but for our lives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-105465\" src=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Luke-lulu-1-768x426.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Luke-lulu-1-768x426.png 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Luke-lulu-1-992x550.png 992w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Luke-lulu-1.png 1988w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Challenge + Positivity = Growth<\/h3>\n<p>Luke says, for example, that when we wake up and recite <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyburn.com\/life\/lifestyle\/instagram-positive-affirmations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">positive affirmations<\/a>, we begin our day from a place of empowered optimism, and are more likely to achieve what we set out to. This is true particularly when approaching something that scares us; we should, in fact, seek out challenges in order to keep growing and moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re complacent with your workouts, I always say, you&#8217;re going to be complacent with your jobs or with your family life or the activity as a husband, wife, father, mother, daughter, or son,\u201d says Luke. \u201cI think all of these things work together, so if we can be energetic with our health, it really stems into making us energetic in our careers, in our family lives, in our relationships, across the board.\u201d That is, when we not only accept challenge with a smile, but also seek it out, we\u2019re catalyzing personal growth and development. Approaching it with a positive attitude only makes those growing pains that much easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you could lead your life with energy, it just changes everything. Like jump up and down when you wake up. Look forward to going out. Find a positive where you don&#8217;t think you can find a positive,\u201d says Luke. This can be applied in mundane, everyday activities, like the necessity to get up and go to work. What if instead of waking up and being disappointed to be back in the rise and grind, so to speak, you immediately expressed gratitude for having a job? If you told yourself how much you were looking forward to seeing people at the water cooler, to swap stories of the weekend? \u201cJust find that one positive that you know is going to be there,\u201d says Luke. \u201cThen you will naturally start to gravitate the energy toward that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This plays into the idea that happiness\u2014or at least contentment\u2014is a choice. We cannot control many of the circumstances in our lives that cause us pain, suffering, or challenge. We can, however, control how we react to these moments. If we approach even the most trying times with gentle <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/watch-sharon-salzberg-breaks-lovingkindness-mindset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lovingkindness<\/a> and acceptance, finding light is possible even in the darkest night.<\/p>\n<h3>Why this Matters in Practice<\/h3>\n<p>Luke believes that approaching any fitness practice with this attitude allows you to grow not only emotionally, but physically as well. When that kind of positivity becomes a habit, it all of a sudden is second nature, and everything\u2014even that handstand you\u2019ve been dreading\u2014becomes a fun opportunity to explore your limits, rather than knock up against them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a 5 percent change,\u201d says Luke, who says that we can make new habits our reality right now\u2014it doesn\u2019t take 10 days, or a month, or any specified number of doing the activity to stick. \u201cThe most powerful thing we&#8217;ve got is the <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlusthollywood.com\/events\/courage-create-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ability to change<\/a>. It&#8217;s really that simple. We can complicate as much as we want, but it is really that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Any sort of fitness activity can be a great way to break stuck patterns, to release ourselves from the shackles of negative self-talk that keep us from wanting to try new things. Rather than approaching fitness activity as something you\u2019re \u201cgood\u201d at\u2014or something that\u2019s \u201cnot for you\u201d\u2014 Luke encourages his students to think about physical activity the same, all across the board. \u201cWhether we&#8217;re running, or we&#8217;re stretching, whether it&#8217;s yoga, whether it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/10-minute-hiit-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HIIT<\/a>, I believe we&#8217;re doing the same thing,\u201d says Luke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re encouraging the heart to pump out more oxygenated blood and we&#8217;re getting it to those working muscles that were fatigued,\u201d he says. \u201cIt&#8217;s all the same thing to me because I really enjoy getting that circulatory system pumping and really working and getting into that central nervous system.\u201d For Luke, it\u2019s just about getting the whole body involved in the action.<\/p>\n<h3>A Well-Balanced Body<\/h3>\n<p>Just as we can balance the physical with the psychological\u2014finding the edge of physicality through positive thinking\u2014Luke believes that the journey to wellness is an integrated practice. \u201cI&#8217;m really big on we have to live a very balanced life in physical health, social health, and mental health. And all three of those need to be of huge [importance] equally,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Physically, this means moving oxygen through our blood. \u201cNutritionally,\u201d he says, \u201cit means we have to get the clean, natural products like Swisse into our bodies. We need to facilitate our body, give it the ability to be able to provide for us.\u201d Emotionally, Luke says this requires us to go out and spend time with people, to satisfy social needs.<\/p>\n<p>So what does it really mean to have a balanced body? And how can we get there? Aside from fitness classes that integrate seemingly opposite modalities, Luke says it\u2019s simple. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/21-day-meditation-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meditate<\/a>, breathe. Take a minute and be yourself. If you are stressed at work, guess what? It&#8217;s going to be there tomorrow. Relax. Stop comparing yourself to other people; no one lives your life. There is no comparison to anyone. We are only living life for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019ve mastered this, we come to balance. <strong>How do you find yours?
