Don\u2019t push past your edge. Try to find a point of focus. You may\u00a0have heard these teachings during your yoga practice. But what would happen if you applied\u00a0these lessons to your finances?<\/p>\n<p>Time spent on your yoga mat is a perfect way for you to connect with and build your self-awareness\u2014and even <a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/10-mantras-to-help-heal-your-relationship-with-money\" target=\"_blank\">your relationship with money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to your finances, the key to managing your money well is to <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/having-it-all-be-your-abundance\/\" target=\"_blank\">manage yourself\u00a0well<\/a>. If you can create awareness of your current beliefs, habits, and behaviors with money,\u00a0you can then develop a more conscious and intentional practice with your money. Below, five simple lessons from the yoga mat that anyone can apply to their finances.<\/p>\n<h3>Be Present<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe future depends on what we do in the present.\u201d \u2013 Mahatma Gandhi<\/p>\n<p>Yoga teaches us to remain present on the mat so that we can learn to remain present off the mat.\u00a0Being present is the ability to tune into this very moment, no matter how difficult or what distractions\u00a0are going on.<\/p>\n<p>Being present with your finances requires you to make an honest assessment of your current reality\u00a0with money. It involves getting clear on what you earn, what you spend, and what you owe. Creating\u00a0this consciousness around how you use and think about your money will provide you with more\u00a0control over it and empower you to make more mindful and intentional money decisions.<\/p>\n<h3>Commit to Your Practice<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cYoga is 99 percent practice and 1 percent theory.\u201d \u2013 Pattabhi Jois<\/p>\n<p>What is good in theory is often good in practice, but it is only with sustained practice that we\u00a0will see results on our yoga mat and with our finances. While you probably know that you should set a budget, spend less than you earn, and save for the\u00a0future&#8230; Just because you know it, doesn\u2019t mean you do it! To truly master anything\u2014whether\u00a0it\u2019s a yoga pose or your spending habits\u2014requires commitment to a regular practice and\u00a0discipline to stick with this practice even when your motivation lacks or willpower weakens.<\/p>\n<h3>Set a Sankalpa (Intention)<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.\u201d \u2013 Socrates<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s common to set an intention at the beginning of your yoga practice. The purpose of <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/guide-finding-your-intention\/\" target=\"_blank\">setting\u00a0an intention<\/a> is to connect your mind to your body so our intentions and actions are in\u00a0alignment. When it comes to your finances, setting a clear intention of what you wish to cultivate will\u00a0enable you to better direct your energy and align your actions in order to achieve it. Just like in your yoga practice, your intention can be a word or phrase that represents a value\u00a0you&#8217;d like to cultivate, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/6-ways-to-balance-your-chakras\" target=\"_blank\">balance<\/a>, focus, compassion, gratitude, or control.<\/p>\n<h3>Find Your Drishti<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can always control what goes on inside.\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/the-dr-wayne-dyer-quote-i-look-at-every-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wayne W. Dyer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The term \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/drishti-what-is-it-good-for\/\" target=\"_blank\">drishti<\/a>\u201d refers to the ability to find a point of focus to rest your gaze and provide you\u00a0with a sense of stability. Your drishti can help you to maintain balance in a difficult or\u00a0challenging pose as it provides a point on which to concentrate in order to remain steady and in\u00a0alignment. When you are faced with many distractions, this technique is useful for stilling the\u00a0mind in order to focus on one specific thing\u2014that which you are trying to achieve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/yoganonymous.com\/find-your-financial-drishti\" target=\"_blank\">Maintaining your drishti<\/a> when it come to your finances requires you to set a clear goal and\u00a0have a point of focus for your money. Creating a focus for your money makes it easier to find\u00a0balance in using and spending your money and can help you to stay on track when\u00a0distractions, excuses, and bad habits come into play.<\/p>\n<h3>Keep Your Focus on Your Mat<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cComparison is the thief of joy.\u201d \u2013 Theodore Roosevelt<\/p>\n<p>It can be very tempting to compare yourself to others both on and off the mat, but there is no\u00a0competition in yoga. Yoga is a personal self-development practice, so your focus should\u00a0remain entirely on your own mat at all times.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to your money, the quickest and easiest way to create feelings of scarcity,\u00a0jealousy, and unhappiness is to focus on what you\u2019re lacking or on what others may have that\u00a0you don\u2019t. Rather than considering it a competition, you could look towards others as sources of inspiration\u00a0for your own journey with yoga and money practices.<\/p>\n<p>The lessons you learn in yoga and on the mat fit almost perfectly into any area of your life, from your\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/relationship-lessons-learn-mat\/\" target=\"_blank\">relationships<\/a> to your health and even to your finances.
