{"id":572,"date":"2013-07-29T22:02:18","date_gmt":"2013-07-29T22:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=572"},"modified":"2013-07-29T22:02:18","modified_gmt":"2013-07-29T22:02:18","slug":"guest-scribe-emily-kane-harmonizing-yoga-extreme-sports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/ja\/journal\/guest-scribe-emily-kane-harmonizing-yoga-extreme-sports\/","title":{"rendered":"Guest Scribe Emily Kane: Harmonizing Yoga &#038; Extreme Sports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yoga may not be the first thing you think of when you\u2019re trying to relate to extreme sports.\u00a0 Images of snowboarders doing aerial stunts and skateboarders dropping in at the skate park are probably first to come to mind.\u00a0 As shocking as it may be, these two seemingly opposite activities can work together synergistically, creating balance in the body and mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2013\/12\/unnamed-119.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-574\" alt=\"Emily Kane 1\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/2013\/12\/unnamed-119-300x237.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a>I had a co-worker once say to me, \u201cYou\u2019re kind of a weird girl, aren\u2019t you, showing up here with manicured nails and a longboard?\u201d \u00a0I guess at first glance I could be considered a bit of a paradox.\u00a0 Being a female thrill-seeker is rare in itself, but being a devoted yogi too?\u00a0 Some of my friends think it\u2019s kind of funny that I have this spiritual, yogi side, when I\u2019m the gal who has no reservations about being the first one to jump off a cliff&#8230; into water or on a snowboard.\u00a0 I\u2019m no stranger to thrill seeking, and yet I don\u2019t understand why more people can\u2019t see the benefits of having the balance of both the exciting and calming aspects of life.\u00a0 We have two autonomic nervous system divisions: the sympathetic or our stress response, and the parasympathetic or our relaxation response. Ideally, we want the two to be balanced and work harmoniously; so what better way to achieve harmony than with extreme sports and a yoga practice?<\/p>\n<p>For yogis who have yet to experience the extreme side of sport, start small and work to challenge yourself.\u00a0 Each person\u2019s perception of what is a thrill often differs.\u00a0 We have varying thresholds for what is considered extreme so try going a tad out of your boundaries, even if that\u2019s just jumping off a diving board.\u00a0 Coming slightly out of your comfort zone will help you be successful and avoid injury.\u00a0 Santosha is the idea of being happy with where you are at in this present moment.\u00a0 Staying present is important in extreme sport to understand your body and its capabilities.\u00a0 This knowledge allows you to set boundaries so that you can progress to achieve goals which will help you avoid injury.\u00a0 Cultivating self-awareness with your yoga practice will prepare you for the thrill seeking challenges you may face. Proprioception, the body\u2019s awareness of where it is in space, is improved with balancing asana, or poses, while meditation and pranayama, the breath techniques, will help you with the body\u2019s stress response.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/unnamed-20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-575\" alt=\"Emily Kane 2\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/unnamed-20-268x300.jpg\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>During stressful situations, one of the best things you can do is take slow, deep breaths. Relax to allow the belly and chest to rise and fall with each inhalation and exhalation.\u00a0 If you find yourself taking a thrill-seeking challenge notice the breath, consciously practice deeper breathing. This will help calm the nervous system and prevent hyperventilation.<\/p>\n<p>It might be scary to attempt a new sport, but try to challenge yourself to engage in the unknown.
