Kathryn Budig didn’t always practice the type of radical self-love one may expect from a world-renowned yogi. Now\u00a0a leader in the body positive community, Budig was one of the first women to use social media as a platform to speak out against body shaming<\/a>. By simply sharing honest images of a body she had once struggled to accept\u2014and developing an open,\u00a0light-hearted approach to yoga\u2014she gained a massive following.<\/p>\n

Budig knows what it\u2019s like to be shamed by the media: by Internet trolls, by haters and naysayers, and by commenters who judge and ridicule women who do not meet the \u2018idealized\u2019 body type. She\u2019s spoken at mindbodygreen\u2019s revitalize summit<\/a> about being a \u2018real woman\u2019 and what that actually looks like, versus striving\u00a0for unattainable and unhealthy perfection.<\/p>\n

Budig\u00a0founded\u00a0Aim True Yoga<\/a>\u00a0as a way to help people\u00a0who struggle\u00a0with their own body image, and is now a role model to yogis everywhere. For Budig, continuing to Aim True is to own her myriad unique talents and qualities\u2014from yoga and athletics to writing and cooking. To “aim true”\u00a0is to stay passionate, even in those moments along the way when\u00a0passion is difficult to find.<\/p>\n

What has given Budig\u2019s popularity staying power is that she’s never deviated from\u00a0her message and values.\u00a0Rather than let herself be governed by the opinions of others, she rises above to continue to hold herself accountable. She keeps her messages simple on social media, and has found that that simplicity allows her to connect with her followers on a more personal level. She explained\u00a0that by spreading the\u00a0universal message of being true to yourself, she finds that she can create a community that can relate to each other and support one another.<\/p>\n

\"KathrynBudigOnWhatItMeansToAimTrue2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cA huge part of aiming true is staying true to yourself and not being ruled by the expectations and judgments of others,\u201d she says. \u201cThis realization helps people see past the stories they tell themselves of where they lack or could be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a dedicated Ashtanga<\/a> yoga practitioner, Budig uses this concept to empower herself and her students on the mat so that\u00a0in turn, they can find that\u00a0same empowerment in life. She aims to help students free themselves from any constraints or self-limiting beliefs they might hold, by facilitating a practice that is less serious and regimented. The Aim True philosophy helps people\u00a0move beyond fear of the unknown, past stories they\u2019ve spent their lives telling themselves about their abilities.<\/p>\n

While Budig\u2019s Ashtanga roots remain intact and her classes are rigorous,\u00a0her teaching approach is\u00a0playful and laid-back. Students can expect joining\u00a0in some uproarious laughter\u00a0and a Karate kick or two; Budig’s style navigates\u00a0the fine balance between physical challenge\u00a0and jovial spiritedness. Budig is an avid martial arts practitioner and weaves in a few Karate Kid-inspired moves into her sequences. \u201cMartial arts is a beautiful way to hone my natural strength that I always possess if I\u2019m willing to access it,\u201d she says. She\u00a0also practices the Zen-like sport of archery.<\/p>\n

At 33-years-old, Budig’s\u00a0enthusiasm is infectious, and she seems to radiate with the non-stop energy of youth. The Under Armour<\/a> athlete\u2019s young-at-heart mentality paired with old-soul wisdom is what makes her shine like the \u201cbright light\u201d renowned Ashtanga yoga teacher Maty Ezraty<\/a>\u00a0recently described her as.<\/p>\n

Budig\u00a0was a child when she discovered a prayer written to the Greek goddess Artemis that read, \u201cMake my aim true\u201d in its opening line. \u201cThis was the catalyst for finding what it meant for me to aim true in my life,\u201d she says. The rest fell\u00a0into place after that.<\/p>\n
