Though the two disciplines are highly complementary, practitioners rarely co-mingled. \u201c<em>I don\u2019t like to Om<\/em>,\u201d one of my diehard pilates class regulars would say. \u201c<em>It\u2019s not \u2018flowy&#8217; enough<\/em>,\u201d stated a dedicated yogini friend who swore off pilates for years. Everyone had an emphatic rationale for why they didn\u2019t want to explore the other <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/yoga-every-athletes-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">side of the fence<\/a>. Until now. With emerging trends like fusion classes that bridge the gap across multiple modalities such as yoga, pilates, dance, <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/what-martial-arts-can-teach-us-about-yoga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">martial arts<\/a>, and body conditioning, what was once a compartmentalized fitness phenomenon is now becoming linked and loved.<\/p>\n<p>But even beyond this trend, there are many\u00a0reasons yogis should try pilates. Here are just a few.<\/p>\n<h3>Powerful Core<\/h3>\n<p>In pilates, every part of the regimen revolves around the core. <a href=\"http:\/\/pilates.about.com\/od\/historyofpilates\/a\/JPilates.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Pilates<\/a> often referred to the core as the \u201cpowerhouse,\u201d the abdominals, lower back and pelvic floor musculature, that, when activated, provide a solid base of support for steady movement. Not only does a strong core make for a safer practice, a yogi needs an unwavering foundation to take on the challenges of arm balances, inversions, and backbends.<\/p>\n<h3>Lengthening &amp; Strengthening<\/h3>\n<p>To activate\u00a0the muscles\u00a0needed for yoga, they need to be\u00a0strengthened, lengthened, and toned\u00a0throughout your body&#8217;s\u00a0range of motion. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/pilates-reformer-reformer-pilates\/b\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;node=13291011&amp;tag=wanderlustcom-20&amp;linkId=VUYEBJDQFDFXP6P3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pilates reformer<\/a>\u2014a piece of equipment built with a carriage platform upon which to lie, sit, or stand on\u00a0while working spring resistance in varying degrees of tension\u2014is built to induce exactly this type of\u00a0lean, mean muscle tone in a variety of positions.<\/p>\n<p>Vinyasa on the reformer, anyone? The reformer long stretch series is just that: A sequence including long stretch (think plank), down stretch (think upward facing dog) and up stretch (think vinyasa into downward dog). This series is performed with spring resistance to deepen range of motion and\u00a0accentuate muscle elongation and strength of the arms, legs, back and core. Translate this kind of work onto your yoga mat and notice how much stronger you feel the next time you vinyasa.<\/p>\n<h3>Control<\/h3>\n<p>Pilates is often referred to as the &#8220;Art of Contrology.&#8221; It takes a tremendous amount of integrative body awareness to directly target muscle activation flanked by optimal form and alignment. While many yogis love\u00a0to let go and flow, having a keen sense of focus and control of movement mechanics provides support for a fluid practice.<\/p>\n<p>Take the move call &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=pilates+teaser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the teaser<\/a>&#8221; in pilates, a show stopper of ultimate control. While the teaser is movement-driven, boat pose (navasana), its yoga counterpart, is often simply held\u2026 For a long time. Both require tremendous control over the arms, legs, back and core, so that you don&#8217;t\u00a0turn into a wobbly mess. From movement into stillness, the teaser is navasana\u2019s soul sister of motor control, stirring peak pose euphoria. Regularly performing pilates teasers will result in an expert\u00a0navasana practice, while also supporting other poses that require secure balance and precision, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/crow-pose-essentials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bakasana<\/a> (crow pose) or a headstand.<\/p>\n<p>Can pilates and yoga thrive as independent practices? Yes, of course. Can a yoga practice be improved and enhanced physically through pilates? ABSOLUTELY.
