Meditation as a Necessity<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91198\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-874146814-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-874146814-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-874146814-992x662.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ve never needed to be Buddhist in order to meditate\u2014if that wasn&#8217;t clear last year, then it certainly is now.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0TIME Magazine and Forbes.com recently shared studies illustrating the practice&#8217;s power to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4959725\/meditation-heart-disease-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lower the risk for heart disease <\/a>\u00a0and lead to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4822302\/yoga-meditation-genes-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">better genes<\/a>, and even provided\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/dinakaplan\/2017\/12\/21\/a-meditation-for-vacation-and-holidays\/#75500cc21717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actual meditations<\/a> to help folks incorporate short moments of mindfulness into hectic schedules.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people harbor reserve toward meditation because they think that they don\u2019t have time, or that meditation is for yoga-loving hippies. (Yes, we do love meditation, but EVERYONE can love meditation.) But with apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\/buy\/newyears?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=917256436&amp;utm_content=51529947492&amp;utm_term=238573809545&amp;headspace&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_a3xxvqd2AIVkoizCh3HdQPLEAAYASAAEgKjs_D_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Headspace<\/a> and videos like <a href=\"https:\/\/tv.wanderlust.com\/catalog\/take-the-challenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wanderlust\u2019s 21-Day Meditation Challenge<\/a>, it&#8217;s clear that meditation is becoming more approachable and accessible. As we move into 2018, we\u2019ll find that people from all walks of life are embracing this mindful activity by making it part of their daily routine. (And we couldn\u2019t be more thrilled.) <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. In fact, in 2018 we can expect Athleisure to get even more more specific, with pieces designed to be multi-purpose. (In other words, brands are catching onto the fact that you were your yoga pants to the wine bar.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ll also see more pieces designed for specific styles of yoga.\u00a0Need a cozy onesie or <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.wanderlust.com\/products\/60863-exploration-guru-pant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guru pant<\/a> for yin? Something simple as you transition from a meeting into a sweaty vinyasa sesh? Or want an outfit that allows you to combine your jog with a post-cardio flow? This year, there will be plenty of fashion opportunities to fit all your yoga needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Psst&#8230;Stayed tuned for new Wanderlust-inspired outfits for the Spring season on March 1!)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>3. The feminine energy, which is celebrated in a variety of historic texts, has arguably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/elizabeth-gavino\/balancing-your-dual-energies-for-greater-happiness_b_5129648.html\">been surpassed<\/a> in favor of more aggressive, masculine energy. This is true regardless of sex\u2014too often we tell boys not too cry or encourage women to &#8220;calm down&#8221; in order to suppress emotions. This year expect to see people finding more creative ways to embrace the feminine energy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ll see this with the increased popularity of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/new-full-moon-rituals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moon Circles<\/a>, or gatherings designed to set<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0intentions that are in tune with the moon. People are heading to full moon sound baths, planning lunar-inspired dinner parties, starting spiritual groups, or simply charting cycles in order to better understand major and minor life shifts. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-advice\/saturn-return-and-how-it-affects-20s-30s-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saturn Return<\/a>, anyone?) Women are finding more ways to express their empowerment\u2014and much of this means staying in tune with the moon. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Finding YOUR diet instead of a FAD Diet<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-91117\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-636592142-768x523.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-636592142-768x523.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-636592142-992x676.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not hard to hear about a new fad diet. This year food and lifestyle changes like the Whole 30 or Keto diet took the eating scene by storm as they promoted unique takes on good-for-you-food. But instead of sticking to the ride-or-die rules of these diets, more and more people are using them as a blueprint for how they eat and then building their own rules. 2018 will be all about tuning into your body and finding out <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/actually-means-listen-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what\u2019s best for you.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year you can expect folks building their own diets rather than hitting the books. \u00a0We\u2019re tuning into our bodies to pick up cues for how we feel about so many different things, be it our relationships, careers, or passions, so why not include our food into this equation? Part of this means journaling your experience\u2014or taking notes how certain things make you feel. Do you feel awesome swapping out bread, but for some reason sourdough works? Are you finding that a healthy middle ground for caffeine is some black tea from the farmer\u2019s market? Your diet is entirely yours\u2014plan to embrace it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. In 2018 we expect to see more ecstatic breathwork, specifically <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holotropic.com\/holotropic-breathwork\/about-holotropic-breathwork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holotrophic breathing<\/a>. This powerful approach is designed to help practitioners enter deep self-exploration and undergo positive transformation.<\/p>\n<p>The process is fairly simple: Holotrophic breathwork combines accelerated breathing with evocative music in a simple yet special setting. The goal is to tap into a &#8220;non-ordinary&#8221; state of consciousness. This desired state\u00a0activates the natural inner healing process of the individual\u2019s psyche, bringing the seeker a particular set of internal experiences. Developed by Czech psychiatrist, Stanislav Grof, holotrophic breathing has been around for a while, but is just starting to float into the mainstream arena. It shouldn&#8217;t be long before we see breathwork joining yoga and meditation in the high ranks of the wellness industry.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Fermented Foods Are Getting Even Better<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-91268\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/35021884960_c43a81b68f_k-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/35021884960_c43a81b68f_k-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/35021884960_c43a81b68f_k-992x661.jpg 992w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/35021884960_c43a81b68f_k.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kombucha, kimchi, and sauerkraut are now fully mainstream. In 2018 you can expect much of the same\u2014but with cooler and tastier twists. Fermented crudit\u00e9, or pickled peppers, celery, carrots, and cauliflower are dominating grocery store shelves and farmers markets. Fermented foods can be found on the menus of a variety of different <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrn.com\/whats-hot\/pickles-gain-prominence-restaurant-menus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restaurants<\/a>, whether or not those establishments be of the health-food variety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kombucha\u2014perhaps the most popular of the fermented products\u2014is becoming just as prevalent in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamag.com\/digestblog\/theres-some-astoundingly-good-kombucha-happening-at-this-south-park-prank-bar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bars<\/a> as craft beer\u2014there are even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/good-food\/ben-and-jerrys-kombucha-ice-cream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice cream flavors<\/a> inspired by the fizzy drink. <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/partners\/studio143\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sales for kombucha<\/a> are also skyrocketing, and designated <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.eater.com\/2017\/4\/28\/15467758\/kombucha-room-open-logan-square-photos-first-chicago-kombucha-bar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kombucha cafes\u00a0<\/a>are popping up throughout the country. Flavors of the drink itself are also getting more creative, including Health Ade&#8217;s Reishi Chocolate and Humm&#8217;s Pomegranate Lemonade. The same is true of kimchi and sauerkraut; creative flavors include Wildebrine Madras Curry and Cauliflower and Mother in Law&#8217;s Napa Cabbage.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, DIY is always an option. And with the emphasis on food-focused budgets and meal-planning, we can expect to see more folks embracing their own recipes of these fermented favorites. (Might we suggest the Wanderlust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wanderlust-Find-Your-True-Fork\/dp\/1623369657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find Your True Fork cookbook<\/a>?)<\/p>\n<h3><b>7. Rather than focusing on single-use, or disposable products, many are finding innovative ways to reuse and recycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastic straws are out and compostable containers are in. Companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperfectproduce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imperfect Produce<\/a> make it easy to support anti-food waste causes, providing subscribers with a box of imperfect (though totally usable and delicious) fruits and vegetables. Zero-waste celebrities Lauren Singer and Daniel Silverstein recently opened <a href=\"https:\/\/packagefreeshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Package Free<\/a> in New York, a store that sells (nearly) everything a person needs to start their transition to a low-waste lifestyle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, people are finding more creative ways to repurpose, such as using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/magazines\/panache\/coffee-is-the-secret-to-flawless-skin-heres-how-you-should-use-it-this-winter\/articleshow\/61933913.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coffee grounds<\/a>\u00a0for a face mask or <a href=\"http:\/\/bust.com\/diy\/12773-period-blood-aka-your-new-garden-fertilizer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">menstrual blood<\/a> for fertilizer. In what ways will you get creative with your recycling? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>8. They\u2019re all powerhouse herbs known as adaptogens.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve likely heard of adaptogens\u2014they&#8217;re a crucial ingredient in the famed Moon Juice and often suggested as a supplement for folks dealing with stress and anxiety. Adaptogens greatly improve your body\u2019s ability to adapt to stress, whether it\u2019s a hectic schedule, chaotic life changes, or a number of other stressors, by increasing stamina, energy, endurance, and mental clarity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018 we can expect to find these miracle herbs in more than a capsule\u2014we\u2019ll see them in some of our favorite drinks. From recipes like <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/hot-chocolate-maca-tonic-herbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adaptogen-Infused Hot Chocolate <\/a>to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesimplegreen.com\/single-post\/2017\/07\/03\/ADAPTOGENIC-COLD-BREW-CINNAMON-COFFEE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cold Brew<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/goop.com\/recipes\/gps-morning-smoothie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smoothies<\/a>, wellness enthusiasts are becoming more and more creative about how they get these magic herbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. Many restaurants are embracing phone-free policies, while <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyish.com\/ish\/these-restaurants-are-serving-up-major-discounts-if-you-turn-off-your-phone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">others<\/a> are <a href=\"http:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/family\/restaurant-offers-discount-to-families-who-put-away-phones-\/1815576\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offering discounts<\/a> to those who stash their devices.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for hotels\u2014Hipcamp, an Airbnb-esque camping site, offers off-the-grid spots for those looking to ditch screen time. The Mandarin Hotel in Las Vegas is even offering a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mandarinoriental.com\/las-vegas\/the-strip\/luxury-hotel\/offers\/digital-wellness-escape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> &#8220;digital wellness escape,&#8221; <\/a>thus ensuring you won&#8217;t be sneaking a scroll. And of course, always feel free to unplug at a Wanderlust event. Snap a selfie and then ditch the phone for a day of analog bliss!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>10. Epigenetics and Biohacking\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-91119\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-614861450-768x513.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-614861450-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/iStock-614861450-992x662.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year, expect to see the term \u201cepigenetics\u201d a bit more. Epigenetics is the study of how different biological and environmental signals affect DNA expression. For example, rather than change the DNA itself, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/page\/sponsored\/nestle\/how-diet-can-change-your-dna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epigenetic signals <\/a>prompt changes in the number of methyl chemical groups attached to a gene, turning it on or off. Scientists are further investigating how eating habits modify gene expression in adults and their offspring.
