But Maine-based artist Jill Pelto has discovered a way to communicate scientific information through <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/5-ways-art-leads-to-mindfulness\/\">artwork<\/a>. Her paintings combine the frightening reality of climate change with a masterful technique in watercolor paintings.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a body\u00a0of work that grabs\u00a0attention and stuns\u2014both through its beauty and somewhat sinister source material.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Art is a uniquely articulate lens: through it I can address environmental concerns to raise awareness and inspire people to take action.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/MOON.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-46042\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/MOON-768x435.jpg\" alt=\"jill pelto\" width=\"768\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/MOON-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/MOON-992x562.jpg 992w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/MOON.jpg 1404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jill titles her work &#8220;Glaciogenic Art.&#8221; Her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillpelto.com\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> states, &#8220;Scientific research and data fuel the content of my artwork. I create pieces to raise awareness [for] interesting and important environmental topics.&#8221; This is clear to those who examine her work. Pelto continues, &#8220;Art is a uniquely articulate lens: through it I can address environmental concerns to raise awareness and inspire people to take action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/creating-organic-planet-solution-climate-change\/\">Climate change<\/a> has been present in Pelto&#8217;s life since childhood. According to Climatechange.org, her father, Mauri Pelto, worked as a glacier researcher in Washington&#8217;s North Cascades for several years. The glaciers in this area are melting rapidly, and the increase of rain (rather than snow), is only making matters worse.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/these-paintings-turn-climate-data-into-art-19986\" target=\"_blank\">Climatechange.org<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Summer trips to the region have been a family affair since Jill was in high school and they\u2019re what piqued her interest in making climate impacts clear.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cTo me it\u2019s really dramatic and it means a lot because it\u2019s something I personally experienced,\u201d she said. \u201cSeeing signs of climate change that were more evident inspired me to pursue science at the same time as <\/em>art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that doesn&#8217;t limit the topics in Pelto&#8217;s portfolio. Rising sea levels, melting glaciers, and endangered species are among the topics explored. In the painting below, Pelto illustrates how rising temperatures are leading to an increased rate in wildfires. You can see the global average temperature between the flames and the forest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/jill-pelto-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-46041\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/jill-pelto-1-1-768x435.jpg\" alt=\"jill-pelto-1-1\" width=\"768\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/jill-pelto-1-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/jill-pelto-1-1-992x562.jpg 992w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/jill-pelto-1-1.jpg 1404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All of the paintings\u00a0raise a haunting\u00a0thoughts: Despite the beauty of Pelto&#8217;s work, they&#8217;re illustrating massive amounts of destruction.<\/p>\n<p>For the future, Pelto\u00a0plans on exploring the decline of eastern Canadian caribou, a species facing increasingly low numbers. She&#8217;s also interested in working with more scientists who have an interest in turning their data into artwork. It shouldn&#8217;t be a problem; Pelto&#8217;s ability to transform frightening facts into breathtaking images is quite clear.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;ll also be able to transform her own research into art. This fall, Pelto will begin the earth science Master&#8217;s program at the University of Maine.
