{"id":39842,"date":"2015-12-22T15:51:34","date_gmt":"2015-12-22T20:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=39842"},"modified":"2016-07-01T16:49:35","modified_gmt":"2016-07-01T20:49:35","slug":"meet-the-artist-behind-the-worlds-first-yoga-mat-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/it\/journal\/meet-the-artist-behind-the-worlds-first-yoga-mat-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Artist Behind the World&#8217;s First Yoga Mat Gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Inside a townhouse in Thonglor, Bangkok, the world&#8217;s first yoga and meditation mat gallery encompasses five floors\u2014a modern show home for\u00a0a new dimension of\u00a0customary\u00a0Zen art.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of <a href=\"http:\/\/chochogreen.com\/en\/permanent-collection\/bangkok-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\">the\u00a0permanent collection<\/a>, called &#8220;Art &amp; Meditation,&#8221; features the work of Fumie Mune, a Japanese yoga teacher and Zen artist, and creator of the Zen Kodo mat. Its purpose: To serve as a sanctuary and healing space, offering respite to the bustling city. The\u00a0Zen Kodo mat is part-art\u00a0installation, part-meditation tool, designed to help expand consciousness and awareness in day-to-day life. Mune&#8217;s eco-friendly handmade product doubles\u00a0as both\u00a0yoga and meditation mat, carefully crafted in Zen and Japanese\u00a0tradition.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0idea for\u00a0Mune&#8217;s\u00a0all-natural, sustainable mat stemmed from the\u00a0realization that a large percentage\u00a0of the world&#8217;s\u00a030 million\u00a0yoga practitioners use\u00a0mass-produced, chemical-laden mats. Her mats are hand-dyed with Thai herbs like <em>waan phrai<\/em> and <em>waan krach\u1ea1b m\u00f3t l\u00fbuk<\/em>, and more basic herbs like cinnamon and turmeric. The Zen artwork is then painted with butterfly pea flower (blue) and roselle flower (red), with\u00a0finishing touches in Japanese charcoal ink.\u00a0The mat itself is made of the earth&#8217;s materials to support a grounding, spiritual practice\u2014water hyacinth and jute, which are wild plants that grow in Thailand.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39864\" class=\"thumbnail aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39864\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo1-768x509.jpg\" alt=\"Fumie Mune at work, hand-painting a Zen Kodo mat. \" width=\"768\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo1-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo1-992x657.jpg 992w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo1.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">Fumie Mune at work, hand-painting a Zen Kodo mat.<\/div><\/div>\n<p>We recently caught up with the artist to learn about her inspiration behind creating the mats and why they&#8217;re beneficial to our yoga and meditation practices, and to gain more\u00a0insight\u00a0about the history of Zen art.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about your background as a yoga teacher\u00a0and your teaching philosophy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I started teaching yoga in Bangkok in 2008. I have also been teaching in Japan after the\u00a0Tsunami in 2011, because I needed to empower Japanese people through yoga. I also lead teacher training programs in English and Japanese both in Bangkok and Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>I teach\u00a0from the view of a Japanese woman with\u00a0a background of practical Zen, Buddhism, Shintoism, and <em>Teaism<\/em>\u2014also\u00a0known\u00a0as <a href=\"http:\/\/japanese-tea-ceremony.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese tea ceremony<\/a>.\u00a0For a very long time,\u00a0yoga\u00a0was limited to male monks who represented our cultural and spiritual backgrounds, and\u00a0conveyed those teachings to the western hemisphere and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is the 21st century now, and there are 30 million people who practice yoga and meditation\u2014which originally came from the Orient.\u00a0 More than 80 percent of them are women.<\/p>\n<p>My teachings include using\u00a0herbs for when a female or child gets sick, and how a woman can strengthen her love and partnership while also being fully committed to her\u00a0social and spiritual missions. I help\u00a0women live more and more brightly every day through practicing\u00a0yoga and meditation.<\/p>\n<p>My husband Kentaro and I integrated these teachings into a form of yoga we named &#8220;Herb Yoga.&#8221; We have published four books in Japanese (soon in English) and one\u00a0DVD in Japan. Herb Yoga has been practiced by more than ten thousand people.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39865\" class=\"thumbnail aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39865\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo2-768x509.jpg\" alt=\"The plant materials that make up the Zen Kodo mat.\" width=\"768\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo2-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo2-992x657.jpg 992w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo2.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">The plant materials that make up the Zen Kodo mat.<\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Why do you think it&#8217;s better to meditate on a mat, rather than a cushion?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I do not deny to use cushions for meditation\u2014sometimes I use cushions when needed, to support my posture.\u00a0For beginners especially, it is recommended to use cushions to support posture and to help keep a relaxed state of mind and body.<\/p>\n<p>However, traditionally, the ideal meditation form is the Buddha&#8217;s\u00a0lotus position.\u00a0In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yoganonymous.com\/yoga-pose-breakdown-padmasana-lotus-pose\" target=\"_blank\">Lotus Pose<\/a>, we can unite with the earth&#8217;s energy by placing our <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/muladhara-chakra-meditation-grow-stronger-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Root Chakra<\/a>\u00a0(First\/Muladhara) directly to the\u00a0floor.\u00a0Lotus enables you to keep ideal bodily alignment, which\u00a0helps deepen your meditation. Your <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/sahasrara-chakra-meditation-divine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Crown Chakra<\/a>\u00a0(Seventh\/Sahasrara) extends\u00a0to the sky, aligning all the\u00a0chakras into one straight line.<\/p>\n<p>In this stressful modern society, many people in Western countries use cushions, beds, or comfortable chairs in order to relax <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/science-doesnt-lie-top-10-reasons-to-meditate\/\" target=\"_blank\">while meditating<\/a>.\u00a0This type of meditation is effective to remove stresses.\u00a0However, there is a risk in this style of meditation to fall asleep while meditating!<\/p>\n<p>The goal of Oriental traditional meditation is to concentrate\u00a0on the here and now,\u00a0and contemplate on the visions of one&#8217;s ideals. Lotus Pose is most effective for this.\u00a0This wisdom is inherited from\u00a0Japan and other Asian countries, and adults will teach their children these things as habits in their daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>For example, traditionally, Japanese people use a tatami mat for sleep, eat, and work in our daily lives.\u00a0Therefore, we are very used to sitting on the floor in\u00a0yogic poses like Lotus or Sukhasana (Easy Pose).\u00a0It is said that the wisdom of yoga, introduced to Japan along with Buddhism 1500 years ago, has naturally melted\u00a0into Japanese lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And why do you recommend the Zen Kodo mat in particular? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first reason is to help your grounding into the earth&#8217;s energy with the mat, which is made up of whole, natural earth materials.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39866\" class=\"thumbnail aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39866\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo3-768x509.jpg\" alt=\"The Zen Kodo Mat Gallery.\" width=\"768\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo3-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo3-992x657.jpg 992w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FumieZenKodo3.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">The Zen Kodo Mat Gallery.<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Second is to help your unity with the Zen teachings (which is said to bring cosmic inspirations) through the\u00a0Zen art depicted on the mats.\u00a0Zen is a meditation-oriented lifestyle, and is also a practical system to live with consciousness in every moment of your daily life.\u2028 Any artworks of Zen, such as a garden, a room, or calligraphic works and paintings, are tools to deepen your meditation.<\/p>\n<p>The third reason is to place yourself into a serene space which deepens\u00a0your meditation and yoga practice.\u00a0We call this concept of the mat the\u00a0&#8220;mobile zen garden.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will you eventually\u00a0sell your mats to North American vendors?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the future, yes, if we are\u00a0able to encounter good partners.
