{"id":31988,"date":"2015-09-04T12:36:39","date_gmt":"2015-09-04T16:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=31988"},"modified":"2015-09-07T15:58:48","modified_gmt":"2015-09-07T19:58:48","slug":"why-is-yoga-so-expensive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/it\/journal\/why-is-yoga-so-expensive\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Is Yoga So Expensive?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, actually, yoga <em>itself<\/em> isn\u2019t expensive. It\u2019s one of the few physical and spiritual practices that\u00a0requires very few materials. Mats are definitely not required, props weren\u2019t popularized until the 20th century, practicing outside in the blazing sun is Mother Nature\u2019s hot studio, and most of the original yoga practitioners wore little more than a loincloth.<\/p>\n<p>No, the actual question we should ask is: \u201cWhy is it so <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/yoga-excuses-too-expensive\/\" target=\"_blank\">expensive to practice yoga in the West<\/a>?\u201d I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve felt the pressure to conform to unspoken \u201cyoga lifestyle\u201d standards. I hear it all the time from my friends, students, and fellow teachers. There\u2019s a weird, implied rule in the yoga world which indicates that the more yoga &#8220;stuff\u201d you have, the more legitimate your practice becomes.<\/p>\n<p>Say what?<\/p>\n<p>This is the thing: Ever heard of aparigraha? It\u2019s a Sanskrit word that means non-possessiveness. I like to loosely translate it as \u201cdon\u2019t be greedy.\u201d The funny thing about aparigraha? It\u2019s literally one of the yamas, the first limb in Patanjali\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expressionsofspirit.com\/yoga\/eight-limbs.htm\" target=\"_blank\">eight-limbed path of yoga<\/a> from <em>The<\/em> <em>Yoga Sutras<\/em>. Aparigraha is considered an absolutely essential ingredient to a balanced yoga practice. Maybe your local studio forgot to mention it because they were too busy pressing you to purchase coconut water and join them on their upcoming Costa Rican meditation retreat.<\/p>\n<p>Now, unlike the person who brings up the <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/ahimsa-yoga-like-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\">yama of ahimsa<\/a> primarily as a way to corral the eating habits of their loved ones, I don\u2019t mention aparigraha to inspire guilt. I mean, I think my $160 yoga mat is one of the best investments of my life, and I was literally pricing meditation pillows on Etsy earlier today. However, as yoga sweeps across the Western hemisphere, I fear that Westerners have created an unshakable link between material possessions and a deepened yoga practice.<\/p>\n<p>This outlook seems to permeate every aspect of Western yoga culture\u2014most successful Western gurus are also <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/wlvt-teachers-take-business-yoga\/\" target=\"_blank\">master business people<\/a>. When you consider that yoga has evolved into a modern industry just like any other, it seems unreasonable to expect anything else. However, this trajectory is the complete opposite of yoga\u2019s nomadic and material-free origin. It\u2019s also off-putting and gives yoga a hypocritical quality that can be discouraging to practitioners who can\u2019t afford all of the bells and whistles. Yoga shouldn&#8217;t feel elitist.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reasonable argument that the solution is simply accepting the profound difference between traditional Eastern yoga practice and its much younger and more eclectic Western sibling. Sure, we must accept that we live in the looming shadow of capitalism. But it\u2019s still the responsibility of teachers and studio owners to take note of this trend, and find new ways to exhibit the true meaning of aparigraha: that regardless of how many yoga retreats you attend or mats you buy, coveting possessions is absolutely not the key to anyone\u2019s definition of enlightenment. Basically, by truly \u201cwalking the walk,\u201d we can actually inspire our students to \u201ctalk the talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Jessamyn-Stanley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30692\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Jessamyn-Stanley.jpg\" alt=\"Jessamyn Stanley\" width=\"200\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>Jessamyn Stanley is a North Carolina-based yoga teacher, body-positive advocate, and writer.
