Just ask <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidspot.com.au\/granny-knew-best-old-fashioned-cleaning-tips-that-work\/\">Grandma<\/a>: homemade cleaning products have been around a long time. Like all trends, sometimes all you need is to shift your thinking. Once you do, you may be left wondering why you ever purchased chemically laden products in often one-time use containers\u2026 for a premium cost. Here\u2019s what you need to know to get started!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting Started<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just because you\u2019re making cleaning products <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/5-ways-eco-conscious-traveling\/\">at home<\/a> doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re safe to eat. Many home cleaning products include <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borax\">borax<\/a> or sodium borate and washing soda (sodium carbonate). These may both be naturally occurring alkaline mineral salts, but they\u2019re not totally benign. In other words, be sure to label your homemade products correctly and keep out of reach of children and pets just like you would a commercial product.<\/p>\n<p>You will find everything you need in most grocery and health food stores. You can also create washing soda by <a href=\"http:\/\/naturesnurtureblog.com\/ttt-turn-baking-soda-into-washing-soda\/\">heating baking soda<\/a> and getting a bit science-y. The key ingredients will be your vinegar, liquid castile soap, salt, borax, and washing soda.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Start Making!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There is no shortage of DIY home cleaning product <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidsuzuki.org\/publications\/resources\/2011\/green-cleaning-recipes\/\">recipes<\/a> on the Internet. Here are some basics to get you started:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liquid laundry soap:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Use \u00bd cup per full load <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 \u00bc cups water<\/li>\n<li>1 cup soap granules<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup borax<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup washing soda<\/li>\n<li>20 drops essential oil (optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Add 4 \u00bc cups water and soap granules to pot. Heat until diluted. Pour into pail with 25 cups water, borax, and washing soda. Stir until dissolved. Add essential oil. Soap will gel as it cools.<\/p>\n<p>For hard water, add more washing soda. To whiten whites, add \u00bd cup baking soda to load.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All-Purpose Spray:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>For tubs, tiles, counters, microwaves, floors, etc. <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 gallon hot water<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup liquid castile soap<\/li>\n<li>1 tbsp borax<\/li>\n<li>20 drops essential oil (optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Combine all ingredients. Pour into spray bottle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All-Purpose Scour:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>A non-abrasive for tubs, tiles, sinks, etc. <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 cups baking soda<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup liquid castile soap<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tip: Before switching to this green cleaner, clean up the waxy residue traditional brands leave behind with a 5% rubbing alcohol to water solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glass and Mirror Cleaner:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Wipe with newspaper to avoid streaks<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bd cup water<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup white vinegar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Combine all ingredients. Pour into spray bottle.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Benefits and Savings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How much money you save will depend on how much you clean. North Americans spend more than <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=GxCPd5bXe-YC&amp;pg=PA22&amp;lpg=PA22&amp;dq=How+many+millions+do+Americans+spend+on+cleaning+products+each+year?&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=Atbwgz7hdj&amp;sig=OEfmlwO9Avn2DEiAM0nyT-Jiung&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0CE4Q6AEwCWoVChMIlrW8paWVxwIVynE-Ch20VwPJ#v=onepage&amp;q=How%20many%20millions%20do%20Americans%20spend%20on%20cleaning%20products%20each%20year%3F&amp;f=false\">$1 billion<\/a> on household cleaning products annually. These products are purchased to fight germs, streaks, stains, and odors to keep our homes sparkling clean. Making your own cleaning products can produce savings of up to <a href=\"http:\/\/moneysavingmom.com\/2013\/02\/52-different-ways-to-save-100-per-year-make-your-own-homemade-cleaners-week-5.html\">$100 a year<\/a>. To boot, \u201csparkling\u201d doesn\u2019t always mean <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/pristine-self-care-a-guide-to-loving-yourself\/\">healthy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bigger winner when it comes to savings is Mother Nature and your health. Manufacturers are not legally required to warn consumers about safety and environmental hazards associated with chronic, or long-term, exposure to chemical ingredients in household cleaning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidsuzuki.org\/issues\/health\/science\/toxics\/the-dirt-on-toxic-chemicals-in-household-cleaning-products\/\">products.<\/a> That means nasty stuff often slips through.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidsuzuki.org\/issues\/health\/science\/toxics\/the-dirt-on-toxic-chemicals-in-household-cleaning-products\/\">Researchers in the U.S.<\/a> identified 133 unique volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from a small sample of consumer products, including six cleaning products. Each product tested emitted between one and eight chemicals classified as toxic or hazardous under U.S. federal laws.<\/p>\n<p>Chemicals in cleaning products can also enter our bodies by absorption through the skin or through ingestion of household dust and chemical residues left on dishes and cutlery. And when cleaning products are flushed down the drain, they can have a serious impact on aquatic ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>In short, homemade cleaning products are cheaper, safer, and cleaner.
