{"id":261215,"date":"2020-10-02T06:09:30","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T10:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=261215"},"modified":"2020-10-02T07:52:07","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T11:52:07","slug":"the-two-arrows-pain-suffering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/it\/journal\/the-two-arrows-pain-suffering\/","title":{"rendered":"The Two Arrows: Pain &#038; Suffering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teaching from the Buddha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two arrows. The first arrow that hits us (an unexpected event, situation, illness etc) causes great pain and hardship. It hurts us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second arrow is our own reaction to this pain and hardship. This second arrow\u2019s name is suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The teaching is that pain &amp; hardship are unavoidable for us all, however, suffering is a choice.\u00a0 Our relationship to pain and hardship are what to a great extent influences our suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see this in my clients, friends, family and myself at times &#8211; that suffering by attaching to repeating the same thoughts, patterns and reactive behaviours can lead us to feeling stuck, hopeless, angry, anxious, overwhelmed and more. Experiencing pain and hardship &#8211; whatever it may be, feels often all-consuming. It can feel overwhelming and unending.\u00a0 Although the pain and hardship may be unavoidable, our suffering rests on whether we choose to stay in the pain or look for a way out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>The Physiological Lifespan of an Emotion<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Neuroscientist Jill Bolte-Taylor concluded that the physiological lifespan of emotion in the body and brain is 90 seconds: arise, peak and dissipate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our relationship to pain and hardship however is what keeps the emotions going.\u00a0 This causes the sympathetic system\u2019s fight\/flight\/freeze\/facade response to be activated.\u00a0 The cause of this activation is often unconscious memories being triggered (memories between birth and 7 years, or a traumatic incident later in life), that is maybe not a real threat to life in the \u2018now\u2019, yet absolutely feels like a real threat.\u00a0 So what to do?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The challenge here is to make the unconscious conscious.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This involves taking time to learn and understand our minds (ego), thoughts and beliefs and what we do when things get hard.\u00a0 Taking time to understand what our coping strategies are consciously and unconsciously.\u00a0 And we need to find the right tools that support us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert Einstein is famously quoted as saying \u201cInsanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How Can We Lessen Our Suffering?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We literally need to think and act differently.\u00a0 We need to create positive new patterns. \u00a0 To do this we need to step outside of what\u2019s comfortable &#8211; what we\u2019ve always done before.\u00a0 We need to shine a light on the pain that we hide.\u00a0 We have to see that what triggers us out in the world as people, are a mirror of a part of ourselves that isn\u2019t fully understood or seen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Go-To tools for this are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thework.com\/\"><b>The Work by Byron Katie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.svadhyaya-yoga.com\/coaching\"><b>Holistic Coaching<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&amp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transformationalbreath.com\/breathwork.aspx\"><b>Transformational Breath.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to understand our mind\u2019s attachment to thoughts and see our conditioning and life story with a lot of.\u00a0 It takes so much courage to sit with ourselves and even more to open up to others about our suffering and insecurities.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I intentionally seek out a community of like-minded folk who are also doing this work. Asking my friends for support when I feel confused, out of balance and stuck is always a turning point.\u00a0 Having a coaching session with my coach or giving myself a Transformational Breath breathwork self-session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The essence of \u2018shadow work\u2019 could be said to be changing our relationship to pain by learning to feel it and be present with it, in order to heal it.\u00a0 Seeking the support of professionals is so helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maitri Meditation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pema Chodron talks of \u2018maitri\u2019 saying that \u201cIt\u2019s much more common for us to disapprove of ourselves or denigrate ourselves.\u00a0 Maitri is a Sanskrit word, and is about beginning to make friends with oneself.\u00a0 Not really thinking it\u2019s going to come from outside of you.\u00a0 And as you know we all look outside of ourselves, we look all over the place to try to make ourselves feel good about ourselves.\u00a0 Not only is it the basis of compassion and the seed of happiness or well being, or being glad to be alive.\u00a0 Where does this come from?\u00a0 A lot of it has to do with our relationship to pain and difficulty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try this Maitri Meditation yourself, taught by Spring Washam a great healer and teacher.\u00a0 Do this anytime you feel disconnected from love and yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit with hands across your heart, and very gently soothe yourself with your hands while repeating to yourself; \u201cI care about your suffering, I care about your pain.\u201d \u00a0 Allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling while offering yourself maitri.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating more suffering, getting in our own ways and self-sabotaging are completely normal and essential for our growth.\u00a0 We need to feel our feelings.\u00a0 We just need to remember, we can\u2019t be enlightened and a victim at the same time.\u00a0 Eventually, we have to choose&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-261447 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Andy-Koh-Samui-Vikasa-Apr-18-Laurence-Vincent-Edney-photo-Credit-768x998.jpg\" alt=\"Andy\" width=\"231\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Andy-Koh-Samui-Vikasa-Apr-18-Laurence-Vincent-Edney-photo-Credit-768x998.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Andy-Koh-Samui-Vikasa-Apr-18-Laurence-Vincent-Edney-photo-Credit-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Andy-Koh-Samui-Vikasa-Apr-18-Laurence-Vincent-Edney-photo-Credit.jpg 788w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andy Nathan is a certified Yoga and Meditation teacher, Holistic Coach and in-training Transformational Breath Facilitator.\u00a0 He leads kirtans and has a passion for djing organic dance music at yoga and wellness events. \u00a0 Andy lives near Cambridge *UK with his two cats Connie &amp; Mo and is a firm believer that miracles do happen!\u00a0 A smile is rarely off Andy\u2019s face, and human connection is his biggest inspiration.
