There are, of course, a few common questions that surround composting<\/a>. The standards: Where\u00a0do you do it, how\u00a0do you do it, and probably the most frequently asked question, doesn’t it smell? Lauren answers all of these questions, and explains that if you do it right, the smell (thankfully) won’t be an issue.<\/p>\n To put it simply, all you really<\/em>\u00a0have to do is look<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u00ab\u00a0A\u00a0really easy way to look is literally just doing a Google search,\u00a0\u00bb says Lauren. \u00ab\u00a0Just simply type in ‘compost pick-up’ in your city, or go to your city’s sanitation website to see if they offer composting.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0Lauren adds that composting can also be called \u00ab\u00a0organic collection,\u00a0\u00bb so be sure to look out for that, too.<\/p>\n Some cities, like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Portland, have municipal composting pick-up in some or all neighborhoods, meaning compost is collected just like recycling or garbage.<\/p>\n Some locations offer drop-off locations for your compost, too. Lauren’s go-to\u00a0drop-off spot? The farmers market in New York City. As Lauren notes, it’s good to get on a schedule, and she finds that heading to the farmers market once a week on Saturdays fits well within her routine. This way, she can do a little post-drop-off food shopping, too.<\/p>\n If\u00a0your city doesn’t offer\u00a0a municipal pick-up or have a farmers market drop-off, Lauren suggests heading to\u00a0businesses that do composting, like coffee shops or natural food markets. \u00ab\u00a0When I lived in LA for a little while, my house didn’t have a drop off,\u00a0\u00bb Lauren says, \u00ab\u00a0so, I would just drop my compost off at Whole Foods.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n You\u00a0can also do your\u00a0composting at home, which leads us to \u00ab\u00a0the how\u00a0\u00bb …<\/p>\n \u00ab\u00a0Composting is really the easiest thing to do, ever,\u00a0\u00bb says Lauren. The basis for this statement? The only equipment you need to purchase if you’re composting at home is a compost bin. That, plus your actual compost waste, is literally all it takes at the most basic level.<\/p>\n A few different at-home composting options exist, depending on the space in which you’ll be working. \u00ab\u00a0In an apartment, you can do something like vermicomposting, which is composting with worms, or use a Bokashi Bucket<\/a>, which is another at home composting method,\u00a0\u00bb says Lauren.<\/p>\n So, how much of what’s in your refrigerator and kitchen cabinets can<\/em> you compost?\u00a0Almost\u00a0<\/em>all of it, save meat and bones. Meat is a bit more difficult to break down in an at home composter, and Lauren doesn’t recommend it. \u00ab\u00a0If you live in a place with woods, just throw [the meat scraps]\u00a0into the woods,\u00a0\u00bb she suggests.<\/p>\n Things like grass and garden clippings, plants,\u00a0vegetables, egg shells, most foods, and even hair and nail clippings\u00a0can head straight to your composting bin.<\/p>\n Now,\u00a0lets get to the biggest question. HOW do you avoid a smell?<\/p>\n As Lauren will remind, if you’re doing it right, there won’t be a smell. In fact,\u00a0not\u00a0<\/em>composting will likely result in a more pungent odor\u00a0coming from your garbage can. \u00ab\u00a0If you use the right amount of paper, wood pulp, and\/or coffee grounds, it won’t smell. When the compost is ready it’s just soil, so it will smell like soil.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n Not all composting bins are created equal. I had recently come across a bin at one of my favorite retailers that was described as an \u00ab\u00a0odor-free composting bin.\u00a0\u00bb When I brought this up to Lauren she informed me that this was\u00a0only a bin to\u00a0house<\/em> compost, and it wouldn’t actually break down what’s inside of it. So, do your research, and make sure you’re getting what you need!<\/p>\n This is basic common sense. If you don’t want animals to be attracted to your compost bin, keep it sealed. \u00ab\u00a0It’s the same thing as garbage. If you have your garbage lying\u00a0out with no lid on it animals are going to come get it,\u00a0\u00bb Lauren says. \u00ab\u00a0But a lot of the composting bins\u00a0that you can buy for outdoor composting have closed, locked lids so animals can’t get it.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n \u00ab\u00a0If you don’t have an option, don’t forget your power as an individual to create one.\u00a0\u00bb Lauren says. \u00ab\u00a0Engage a few friends and do a communal composting, talk to your sanitation department, or your city government to try to designate a local composting site,\u00a0\u00bb Lauren suggests.<\/p>\n \u00ab\u00a0It sounds like a lot of work, but for anything to get started\u2014especially on a municipal scale\u2014there always needs to be a pilot.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n Lauren says, \u00ab\u00a0keeping it in your freezer is just like keeping any other food in your freezer, it won’t contaminate anything. It won’t get your other food gross, it doesn’t make anything dirty.\u00a0It’s totally safe.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n In fact, Lauren freezes her compost, too. \u00ab\u00a0The reason I freeze it as well is that it helps it to not leak when I’m\u00a0transporting it. My walk is 20 blocks to the farmers market, and\u00a0it won’t melt in that time, so there’s no risk of leakage.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n Remember that mishap I referred to earlier? Well, here’s the story.<\/p>\n After Thanksgiving, Lauren took compost from her aunt’s house to bring to a drop-off. Unfortunately, neither she, nor her aunt, had paper bags, so, Lauren got inventive. \u00ab\u00a0I literally wrapped it in paper towels,\u00a0\u00bb Lauren recalls, \u00ab\u00a0because I was like ‘I refuse to throw this in the garbage,’ but it wasn’t frozen, and I took it all without freezing it\u2014which inherently was a very big mistake.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n A long three-hour drive caused the compost to begin to seep through the paper towels, threatening disaster.<\/p>\n \u00ab\u00a0I got out of the car to go take it to the market, and standing right in front of me was Miss J. Alexander from ‘America’s Next Top Model,'\u00a0\u00bb Lauren says. \u00ab\u00a0All of the compost fell through the paper towels and all over the ground right in front of Miss J.
