It was a cool, clear August night in 2005. Michael O\u2019Neill had a yoga mat<\/a> tucked under his arm, enjoying the unseasonably fresh air, when he bumped into his Vanity Fair<\/em> photo editor walking up Fifth Avenue. He told her he was coming from class, and she picked up his conversation about yoga.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told her I\u2019d really like to do a portfolio of masters and gurus,\u201d he says, \u201cand she finished my sentence\u2026 \u2018And then a book,\u2019 she said. That was the moment when it started.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Yoga<\/em><\/a> (Taschen, 2015) is no ordinary photography portfolio. It\u2019s a journey through the history of and\u00a0an exploration into the spiritual heart of yoga, as told through the lens of one of the most accomplished photographers of our age.<\/p>\n

\"india2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On contract with Fortune<\/em> as well as Vanity Fair<\/em>, and also having shot for the New York Times Magazine<\/em> for years, O\u2019Neill had worked <\/a>with Bill Clinton and Al Gore, Clint Eastwood, and Richard Nixon\u2014Oliver Stone hired him to do stills for his presidential biopic. He had captured the essence of great conductors, golfers, even all the reigning 20th century heavyweight champions for Life<\/em> magazine, but the question begged: Why had no one shot with the great masters of yoga?<\/p>\n

There was a personal motivation for wanting to work with yoga luminaries and gurus as well. \u201cI wanted to meet them, to go study and learn,\u201d O’Neill\u00a0says. None other than the illustrious Gurmurkh<\/a> told him later that he had been a channel\u2014he was meant to do this project.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

O\u2019Neill\u2019s personal journey with yoga began in earnest after he was recuperating from a serious arm injury in 2000. He had maintained what he considered a beginner\u2019s yoga practice throughout the 1980s and \u201990s, practicing once a week. After his injury, O\u2019Neill turned to hydrotherapy and yoga to help rebuild his nervous system, and found strength and salvation in a Kundalini practice, the yoga of awareness. Having spent the better part of his life photographing, trying to be aware and conscious, Kundalini was a beautiful fit. \u201cI became addicted to yoga,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s now completed teacher training and has sincerely studied yoga therapy. O\u2019Neill is in his late sixties, and says\u00a0that the increasing popularity of yoga in the Western world could be at least in part due to the distracting cacophony of technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was a boy, I looked at the sky; I sat under a tree in the shade. I loved to go out in the rain and look for salamanders,\u201d he remembers. O\u2019Neill believes that yoga offers a de-stressing mode, a calming solution to 21st century challenges\u2014a solution that requires little more than a two-by-five-foot rubber mat.<\/p>\n

\"dharma<\/a><\/p>\n

Yet O\u2019Neill also understands the deep complexity of yoga\u2019s seemingly simple legacy. He struggled with the acceptance of \u201cyoga as gym class,\u201d as many modern spiritual seekers may. Eddie Stern, founder of Ashtanga Yoga New York<\/a> and one of O\u2019Neill\u2019s personal gurus, refuses to allow him to call it “modern yoga,” however, insisting that it’s merely yoga in modern times. A similar debate happened with Deepak Chopra: O\u2019Neill recalls that he was bemoaning that yoga had become a form of popular exercise, and Deepak Chopra<\/a> chided him, But they\u2019re doing yoga!<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDeepak\u2019s point of view is perfect,\u201d O\u2019Neill says. \u201cWe can sit here and say that yoga is losing its spirituality, its classical roots, which I feel. But I don\u2019t have the right to say that\u2026 If [a practitioner] has a great soundtrack, and they\u2019re moving through vinyasa, does that mean it\u2019s any less spiritual than doing your Ashtanga series? It\u2019s yoga.\u201d<\/p>\n

As such, On Yoga<\/em> doesn\u2019t merely document yoga\u2019s classical roots, or the perfection of asanas. The book is an exploration of the evolution of yoga and of its spiritual components\u2014a journey akin to O\u2019Neill\u2019s personal one with his practice. The story of yoga unfolds in the book in the same way that the artist himself was evolving with the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I was using yoga and transforming myself and trying to change who I was as a human being\u2014emotionally, physically, and spiritually\u2014that manifested itself \u2026 in the quality of the photographs,\u201d O’Neill says.<\/p>\n

Looking through On Yoga<\/em>, the yoking of physical practice and the spiritual realm is palpable. \u201cThere are asanas<\/a>,\u201d O\u2019Neill says, \u201cthe extremely beautiful perfection of asana. But there\u2019s also just a perfection of the eye and soul of someone looking back into the camera.\u201d O\u2019Neill recalls photographing\u00a0B.K.S. Iynegar<\/a> during his personal practice\u2014the master at 88 years old. Though the asana was perfect, O\u2019Neill said that the pictures of his face clearly reveal a deep spirit, something more than the postures. This, he believes, is yoga\u2019s gestalt: Practice is more than just someone standing on his head.<\/p>\n

To reach that yoking takes a special energy. O\u2019Neill has spent his life working to break down the wall between his lens and his subjects, and understands that his ability to do so defies tangible explanation. \u201cIt has to do with my heart opening up to their heart, the trust that I engender with the people I work with,” he says. “It has to do with trust, love, joy, interest, fascination, and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being able to connect with people in this way through his work has led O\u2019Neill to some pretty spectacular locales, and shooting for\u00a0On Yoga<\/em>\u00a0was no exception. During his 10-year journey making the book, one stand-out moment for O\u2019Neill was when he and his crew were venturing to Mt. Kailash<\/a> in Tibet, one of the world\u2019s most venerated sacred places. The day was a deep sort of grey, with snow blowing in from the valley, and the crew decided to stop at Milarepa\u2019s cave<\/a> along the way. Instead of going inside with everyone else, O\u2019Neill found a gigantic rock overlooking the valley and sat and meditated there for half an hour, the snow swirling around his face, his back to the entrance of the\u00a0cave\u2014one of Buddhism\u2019s holiest sites. \u201cIf you really want to break it down to one moment,\u201d he says, \u201cthat\u2019s about as special as it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"burning<\/a><\/p>\n

O\u2019Neill said that creating On Yoga<\/em> was an incredible experience that felt comparable to going back to school. The opportunity to both deepen his personal experience through yoga and to learn and work with the great yogic masters for this book was a gift. In return, he says, the book is supposed to be an homage, a way of giving back to the yoga world, \u201cso people have a way of seeing aspects of yoga in the book and feeling the spirit, so I can say thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
