This is part of a month-long series on Wanderlust about how items and practices came into being<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

I recently had a bank teller ask me what I do for a living. When I said, \u201cyoga teacher,\u201d he replied, \u201cOh, like\u2026 Aum yoga?\u201d He drew out the syllables, his hands bent up in a casual chin mudra.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no secret that yogic symbolism and lifestyle regalia is now so well-known that they have become stereotypes. The infamous \u201cAum<\/a><\/em>\u201d is no exception. Teachers often lead students in making this sound at the beginning and end of a yoga class. It\u2019s also often the bookend for chants derived from Hindu tradition (ex. Aum Shanti Aum<\/em>). Hindus believe that the sound Aum is the embodiment of universal essence\u2014the original sound of the universe.<\/p>\n

OK\u2026 So if God created Aum<\/em>, it\u2019s bound to have an interesting backstory. Thought to originate from the Hindu Dharma in the Vedic tradition, ancient India\u2019s great literature touts Aum<\/em> as the symbol that represents the nature of the universe. Based on Hindi worldview this comprises the spiritual journey<\/a> out in the material world, moving from the mundane to the sublime.<\/p>\n

Divine triads show up often as part of Hindu philosophy\u2014three realms of existence (Dreaming, Sleeping, Waking), three major Hindu Gods (Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu), three major Hindu Goddesses (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga<\/a>), three Vedic scriptures. These holy trinities pack a punch of symbolism and create an important framework for understanding the philosophy inherent to the culture that they originate from.<\/p>\n

From the dead language of ancient India, Aum<\/em> is composed of three Sanskrit<\/a> letters. Each letter symbolizes the cyclical nature of Nature itself, as a movement from birth to death. Of its three syllables, it has four parts: \u2018A\u2019 representing the beginning of a life cycle and the impetus of creativity, \u2018U\u2019 representing the middle of a life cycle and the sustaining of it, \u2018M\u2019 representing the end of a life cycle and the destruction of it, and a silent pause where sound itself dissolves into space before the cycle begins again.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s go back to that \u201coriginal sound of the world\u201d bit. In Hindu cosmology, Aum<\/em> is a bija mantra<\/em>, or sacred seed sound, which created all other sounds and vibrations in our universe.\u00a0 Aum <\/em>was the original vibration that rippled through pure enlightened awareness, creating the complicated and intricate patterns of our individual consciousness. The Vedas describe this sound as the unmanifested state of Brahman<\/a> that later became countless variations of material and metaphysical life. Interestingly enough, there\u2019s some shared idea about this between the Hindi worldview and contemporary quantum physics (ie: String Theory).<\/p>\n

From the Radiant Sutras, it is the proverbial \u201chell yes!\u201d used to exalt the aphorisms passed down by our ancient yogic ancestors through verse and script. It\u2019s regarded as the sacred affirmation, used to recognize the Krishna consciousness in the mundane and microscopic details of ordinary life and implemented in religious rites, chanted meditations, and prayerful celebration. If we could eavesdrop on our universe from Brahman\u2019s estate itself, we would hear the ever-present Aum<\/em> as the constant in the infinite wave of life cycles playing out simultaneously.<\/p>\n

Whether used in jest, regaled in prayer, scribbled through fashion, or felt on the unconscious plane after a sweaty asana practice, the infamous Aum<\/em> is the sound of Samadhi<\/em> itself. Samadhi<\/em> is the spontaneous uprising of divine embodiment brought on by yoking the mind with the body physical.<\/em><\/p>\n

Joining with the divine nature of life itself is an active\u2014and often lifelong\u2014practice many yogis and other spiritual practitioners take on. Reached at the pinnacle of concentration, we unite with the supreme love of god spirit, dissolved from our differences. Aum, in symbol as much as vibration, is the sound of Samadhi<\/em> itself.<\/p>\n
