With great power, comes great responsibility (Spiderman reference, FTW).<\/p>\n

The yoga community has witnessed a very consistent parallel in recent years: as the popularity of yoga reaches a near-nauseating fever pitch, so has the need for real, tangible body, race, gender, and LGBTQ diversity in yoga media. Yet, when you Google image search<\/a> the word yoga, it looks like a lot of the same person over and over again.<\/p>\n

So what gives? Why isn\u2019t this changing? And who\u2019s responsible for the change?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s break this down into a couple scenarios:<\/p>\n

Scenario 1<\/b><\/p>\n

When you order a turkey (tofurkey) sandwich, but instead you receive a roast beef (tempeh) sandwich instead, do you:<\/p>\n

A. Aggressively throw the unwrapped sandwich back at the counter, and, as lettuce flies every which way, call the shop owner a series of expletives.<\/p>\n

B. Take the sandwich home and update your Facebook status, posting a photo of the sandwich and add in an FML for good measure.<\/p>\n

C. Swear off buying sandwiches forever.<\/p>\n

D. Figure the sandwich preparer isn\u2019t perfect and makes mistakes sometimes and politely ask him to remake the sandwich.<\/p>\n

E. Just eat the sandwich and get over it. It\u2019s a sandwich.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m gonna go out on one of the 8 limbs of yoga here (#yogapun) and assume that most of you chose D\u00a0(which stands for duh) or E (which stands for eat).<\/p>\n

Let me give you another unrelated but worthwhile scenario:<\/p>\n

Scenario 2<\/b><\/p>\n

When you see a photograph of a lithe, white woman in barely-any clothing, doing an advanced yoga pose on social media, do you:<\/p>\n

A. Comment saying, \u201cthis isn\u2019t yoga\u201d and \u201cshe needs to eat a sandwich\u201d and scold the brand for always only showing the 1 percent.<\/p>\n

B. Share the status on your timeline and invite your friends to join you in raising your pitchforks and torches as you storm the castle that is Mainstream Yoga Media.<\/p>\n

C. Unfollow the brand and tell all your friends that Westernized yoga is garbage, that Americans have ruined it, and we\u2019re all doomed.<\/p>\n

D. Send an email or post a comment asking if the brand would be open to creating more diverse content, while offering your insights, energy and thoughts on how that could be done.<\/p>\n

E. Keep scrolling. You have better things to worry about. Social media is not real life.<\/p>\n

There are obviously many more possible choices in this situation (like posting, \u201cBeautiful!\u201d), but as the former social media manager of Wanderlust, I have statistics proving that a and b are two of the most common responses.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not breaking any news by stating that social media and media in general can be a complicated, unruly beast. Studies have been released linking depression to our social media addiction<\/a>. People will<\/a> not<\/a> stop<\/a> arguing about whether or not posting a #yogaselfie<\/a> makes you a narcissistic sociopath. People have a right to be upset and confused and the lack of diversity is deplorable at best. So much of the frustration is super understandable.<\/p>\n

Truth is, there isn\u2019t an easy, one-size-fit-all solution to the very real diversity problem. There is a level of responsibility on the part of brands and media organizations, yes absolutely. But how do you take real life action so you can see real life change?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s try this:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Every time you click or comment on something\u2014even if you think it\u2019s terrible garbage\u2014you are algorithmically telling social media that you want to see more of it in your feed. Stop doing that.<\/li>\n
  2. Search for photos and stories about diversity and share them like crazy.<\/li>\n
  3. Contact Wanderlust or Yoganonymous and tell your story. Seriously. We want to hear it<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  4. Stop waiting for the world to show you what you want to see and start sharing what you want to see. Need inspiration? Follow Jessamyn Stanley<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  5. Close your computer and go to yoga. Look around. What do you see?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
