{"id":26205,"date":"2016-01-04T09:31:13","date_gmt":"2016-01-04T14:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=26205"},"modified":"2016-01-04T11:00:56","modified_gmt":"2016-01-04T16:00:56","slug":"how-to-find-your-lifes-calling-and-turn-it-into-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/es\/journal\/how-to-find-your-lifes-calling-and-turn-it-into-career\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Find Your Life&#8217;s Calling and Turn It Into a Career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8220;When I grow up, I want to dislike my job.&#8221; \u2013 said no one, ever.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Friends, I&#8217;m sure you would agree that no one\u00a0wants\u00a0to dislike their life\u2019s work. Unfortunately, many of us find ourselves in exactly this situation. A 2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/susanadams\/2014\/06\/20\/most-americans-are-unhappy-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">Conference board survey<\/a>\u00a0found that roughly 40 percent of Americans don\u2019t find their work interesting and a whopping 52.3 percent are just plain unhappy on the job. Philosophically we need to avoid this pitfall, but how can we find happiness, engagement and meaning at work?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s consult the science!<\/p>\n<p>Positive psychologist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_on_flow?language=en\" target=\"_blank\">Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi<\/a>\u00a0(the flow guy) interviewed over 100 highly generative science and creative types to see how they found their calling.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/index.cfm?fa=buy.optionToBuy&amp;id=2003-04013-004\" target=\"_blank\">The study<\/a>\u00a0revealed a consistent narrative, which researchers have termed \u201cvital engagement.\u201d It\u2019s generally defined as \u201ca relationship to the world that is characterized both by experiences of flow (enjoyed absorption) and by meaning (subjective significance).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It already sounds like practical criterion, right? Well, let\u2019s consider the nitty-gritty and a quick journaling activity that might shed some light on your life\u2019s calling.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Journal about \u201cFlow Activities\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Researchers found that for most of these extraordinary people, their careers evolved organically from consistent and prolonged experiences of flow. These Flow Activities (Flowtivities?) led to deeper immersion in the culture and eventually a broad base of knowledge, skills, relationships and actions developed and become part of their personal identities.<\/p>\n<p>Grab a piece of paper\u00a0and answer the following (a stream of consciousness list will do):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where have you consistently found that \u201cin the zone\u201d sensation of being so deeply immersed in an activity that you lost your sense of time and self?<\/li>\n<li>Name\u00a0an area (or more than one)\u00a0where you have felt compelled to learn and actively challenge your skills.<\/li>\n<li>Where have you felt a sense of absorbed enjoyment that drove you toward deeper involvement?\u00a0<em>For instance, many writers describe feeling \u201cswept away by a project.\u201d They feel driven to research topics, study the dictionary and talk to other writers about their work.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Where have you felt swept away? What topics have you researched on your own time?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, what\u2019s on your list? Science? Sports? Dance? Magic?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever your answers, you now have a list of Flowtivities that can be used to narrow options and find your life\u2019s calling.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Journal about meaning and self-actualization<\/h3>\n<p>The interviews revealed a second, equally important aspect of \u201cvital engagement\u201d: meaning. Your list so far could include activities like ping-pong and video games, which are awesome, but generally aren\u2019t considered fulfilling as a vocation. When we get older and look back on our lives, we\u2019ll want to know it meant something. Studies suggest that we humans find meaning in altruism and dedicating ourselves to a cause. These are also the kinds of pursuits that strengthen our most valued personal traits and make us into our best possible selves.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the following on the same piece of paper:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What sorts of activities make you feel as though you are living a good life?<\/li>\n<li>If you were told that you have 24 hours to live, which long-term goals would you regret not attaining?<\/li>\n<li>What would the best version of yourself be doing with his\/her life?<\/li>\n<li>What sorts of projects sharpen the qualities you most admire in yourself?\u00a0<em>For example, many nurses feel an abiding sense of purpose and life satisfaction. They feel like nursing cultivates their altruistic side; they feel like they are helping others and that their job is fulfilling.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Where do you find these things?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a03. The Venn diagram<\/h3>\n<p>Look at the two lists and take note of overlap. These are your sweet spots. The center of this Venn diagram combines the joy of engagement, your skills, the good life and self-actualization.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe there are a few clear answers. Maybe these are fields you ought to explore. Or maybe writing more options for the two lists will help. But at the end of this exercise, there ought to some idea of how\u00a0take the next step toward a job that excites you.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, let me just say that I know pragmatism plays a role in life and we can\u2019t all be acrobats in the circus. My advice is to be realistic, but be optimistically realistic. With hard work, we can accomplish far more than we think we can. I may not become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.holstee.com\/blogs\/mindful-matter-2015-03\/17315604-surviving-creative-block-or-what-ernest-hemingway-and-amy-poehler-know-about-endurance\" target=\"_blank\">the next Hemingway<\/a>, but if I keep at this writing thing I can certainly make a living doing what I love.
