One of the more common types of classes offered in any of these places is a plain old\u00a0Vinyasa Flow. Regardless of how ubiquitous the style may be, it can be difficult to truly understand its\u00a0subtleties.<\/p>\n<h3>The Basics<\/h3>\n<p>The definition of yoga is \u201cto yoke,\u201d to join together. The linking of the breath and movement was developed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/free-yoga-class-doug-swenson-ashtanga-extra-spice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashtanga<\/a> system taught by Krishnamacharya who taught the grandfather of Ashtanga Yoga, Pattabhi Jois.\u00a0Ashtanga yoga is a set series of postures linked together that purify the system by creating heat or \u201ctapas\u201d in the body, which literally translates as \u201cto burn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vinyasa means \u201cstep by step\u201d or \u201cto place in a special way.\u201d In a <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/shiva-rea-the-roots-and-evolution-of-vinyasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vinyasa flow<\/a> practice, movement is linked with breath.\u00a0The sequence and postures, however, may change from class to class, incorporating a more creative combination of postures. This process anchors the mind and creates a moving meditation known as <em>flow<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with Surya Namaskar A, a class will usually include nine postures linked together with breath. The point of this process is to help warm up the joints and spine, increase blood flow, and create a connection to breath and body.<\/p>\n<p>From here, a series of standing postures are intertwined while <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/7-practice-hacks-for-yoga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Surya Namaskar<\/a> is repeated in between. The postures are held for several breaths in order to warm up the legs and the deeper muscles close to the spine for postures like backbends and <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/why-inversions-are-good-for-your-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inversions<\/a>. At the top of the class, often called the \u201cpeak,\u201d you\u2019ll experience more intensity. If the sequence is taught well, a teacher can lead students to this point in a fluid way, creating a profound shift in the way one feels. The sequence can also lead you into poses you never thought you could do\u2014the heat that is created helps you peel away tension and helps to connect\u00a0you to that blissful place inside.<\/p>\n<h3>The Landing<\/h3>\n<p>At the end of a typical vinyasa flow class there will be some type of cool down, to help students prepare to rest in corpse pose: <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/wlhq-savasana-come-quickly-one-mans-take-starting-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">savasana<\/a>. This is when the body rests and the mind gets still, prepping us for meditation. This is also when the exquisite release is experienced in the body, mind, and spirit, and bliss can radiate through your being.<\/p>\n<p>Vinyasa flow can be fun, invigorating, creative, and a journey into the unknown. I love teaching this type of class because of the creative element, and the unlimited postures that there are to explore. These practices are meant to be repeated so our minds don\u2019t have to think and we can focus on how our bodies feel as we move from pose to pose.\u00a0 Vinyasa flow can connect you to your spirit because of its meditative quality and the connection to the breath.<\/p>\n<p>Pattabhi Jois often said, \u201cstep by step and all is coming.\u201d Step by step we teach ourselves to stay in the moment, and experience change from a place of introspection that the breath guides us to. Only when we get out of our heads and into our bodies are we able to learn to flow with what the moment offers. This practice allows us to burn away the layers and congestion that block us from feeling our highest potential of love\u2014including a deep <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wanderlust.com\/self-love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-love<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And that, ultimately, is what vinyasa yoga is all about.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28802 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Headshot-Joan-Hyman-144-by-Patric-Pop-LD-socialmedia.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headshot-Joan-Hyman-144-by-Patric-Pop-LD-socialmedia.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headshot-Joan-Hyman-144-by-Patric-Pop-LD-socialmedia-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Headshot-Joan-Hyman-144-by-Patric-Pop-LD-socialmedia-185x185.jpg 185w\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/>Joan\u2019s grounded teaching style creates space for students to deepen their personal journey while ali<\/em><em>gning with teachings of true yogic traditions.
