On the way, she will be sharing stories of triumph, loss, joy, and growth from Actual Humans of Yoga. Or, as we like to call it: #AHOY! <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tatumfjerstad.com\/#move-sit-write-tour-tickets-section\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet Tatum<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along her journey or <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tatumfjerstad.com\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">email her<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to share your story.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I met <a href=\"http:\/\/michellecjohnsonyoga.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Johnson<\/a> in Carrboro, North Carolina, and became instantly fascinated by her empowered, kind presence. Had she not told me, I would have never known that she coming out the other side of battling a deep sense of fear for her own life.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before I tell you her story, though, I need to say something. The definition and purpose of fear has been greatly misunderstood in the yoga community for some time. With quotes like, \u201cOnce you become fearless, you become limitless,\u201d we are sending the message that fear should be shamed and beaten out of us. But that\u2019s just not true. Like anger, <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/how-fear-reminds-us-to-be-present\/\">fear can be useful<\/a> and it must be safely expressed when it is felt, or it will become repressed and eventually come out somewhere else in some ugly way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, we cannot decide what should and shouldn\u2019t be scary to another person. As Michelle says, \u201cWe don\u2019t know what it\u2019s like to move around in another person\u2019s body in the world. We don\u2019t get to generalize other people\u2019s experiences based on what we know about ours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as you read her story, if you notice yourself debating the legitimacy of her fear, remember: this isn\u2019t about your experience. It\u2019s about hers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Moral-Monday-meditation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-49757\" src=\"http:\/\/live-wanderlust-fest.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Moral-Monday-meditation-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"Moral Monday meditation\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Moral-Monday-meditation-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Moral-Monday-meditation.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Michelle is a yoga teacher, social worker and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dismantlingracism.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dismantling Racism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trainer. She is passionate about discussing power and privilege and educating communities about what it means to be anti-oppression and anti-racist. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her passion, however, took a hard hit when the media continued to report on the deaths of men and women of color who have been killed by law enforcement. For example: Michelle was undone by Trayvon Martin\u2019s death, but when she heard the news of George Zimmerman\u2019s acquittal, she fell apart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was on the ground, sobbing and could not be consoled. Something in me cracked open that day and I was sure it would never be repaired,\u201d she says. \u201cI thought to myself, \u2018We are fucked. The world is going down fast.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know what it\u2019s like to move around in another person\u2019s body in the world. We don\u2019t get to generalize other people\u2019s experiences based on what we know about ours.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The once-so-hopeful advocate traded in her newfound hopelessness for depression when Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Freddie Gray became household names for the worst reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started to walk through life thinking, \u2018OK, when\u2019s the next brown person getting killed?\u2019 And I am generally not that kind of hopeless person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She began to isolate and numb out in ways she had never before considered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, Sandra Bland died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was it,\u201d she says. \u201cI thought, I could be driving in my car and have an interaction with police and I could get killed. That is a possibility. I had never felt that afraid before. I would have an anxiety attack just passing a cop on the freeway. I was basically waiting for someone to harm me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Desperation and doubt settled in while her <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/slow-down-soak-up-now-stay-present\/\">ability to be present<\/a> quickly faded. She couldn\u2019t show up to protests, serve her clients, or teach her students as she once had. Over time, she realized she needed to do the work of healing herself, and she knew this work will likely be a lifelong process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using the breath, which stops when people are experiencing trauma, she has found ways to feel safe and is teaching others how to locate this for themselves. Michelle breathes easiest on her mat or her meditation cushion. The fear is still there and she\u2019s not trying to run from it or numb it. Instead, she\u2019s working with it to become a better teacher, healer and advocate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we have our feet on the ground we\u2019ll know there are things to be afraid of.
