Instead, many experimentations focused on smaller groups that were not randomized\u00a0like\u00a0Buddhist monks <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/meditation-helps-veterans-self-manage-chronic-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">or veterans<\/a>, and\u00a0they neglected to use a placebo control group\u2014the ultimate litmus test for\u00a0scientific study. No one had yet to hypothesize\u00a0that by faking &#8218;mindfulness&#8216; using essentially, a meditation placebo, might yield different neurological results\u2014until now.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, a new study\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006322316000792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in\u00a0<em>Biological Psychiatry<\/em><\/a>\u00a0showed for the first time, a direct correlation between traditional meditation practices and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alicegwalton\/2015\/02\/09\/7-ways-meditation-can-actually-change-the-brain\/#216be52f7023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a rewiring of the brain<\/a>. The study involved\u00a035 unemployed men and women who were selected randomly and experiencing significant levels of stress. They were divided into two groups: one that used\u00a0mindfulness meditation techniques and the other, a sort of made-up,\u00a0bogus\u00a0mindfulness that included relaxation practices.<\/p>\n<p>Brain scans were conducted on\u00a0all participants and blood was drawn so that the underlying neurological mechanisms could be studied closely. The experiment was led\u00a0by J. David Creswell, an associate professor of psychology and the director of the Health and Human Performance Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Creswell told <em>The New York Times<\/em> that true mindfulness meditation requires, &#8222;an open\u00a0and receptive, nonjudgmental awareness of your present-moment experience.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/18\/contemplation-therapy\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Times<\/a><\/em> has more:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2018\u2018We had everyone do stretching exercises, for instance,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Creswell says. The mindfulness group paid close attention to bodily sensations, including unpleasant ones. The relaxation group was encouraged to chatter and ignore their bodies, while their leader cracked jokes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>At the end of three days, the participants all told the researchers that they felt refreshed and better able to withstand the stress of unemployment. Yet follow-up brain scans showed differences in only those who underwent mindfulness meditation. There was more activity, or communication, among the portions of their brains that process stress-related reactions and other areas related to focus and calm. Four months later, those who had practiced mindfulness showed much lower levels in their blood of a marker of unhealthy inflammation than the relaxation group, even though few were still meditating.\u00a0Dr. Creswell and his colleagues believe that the changes in the brain contributed to the subsequent reduction in inflammation, although precisely how remains unknown. Also unclear is whether you need to spend three uninterrupted days of contemplation to reap the benefits. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>So yes,\u00a0this study tells us more of the same: that meditation is really, <em>really<\/em> good for you. But it&#8217;s an interesting discovery that while general relaxation techniques might help to get us out of our heads and\u00a0alleviate\u00a0internal stresses, it is the actual practice of meditation that works to\u00a0enhance\u00a0our cognitive function by\u00a0switching us off from reactionary autopilot mode.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully more of these randomized\u00a0studies will be conducted on larger, more relatable populations, continuing\u00a0to prove meditation&#8217;s ability to change our brain for the better and improve overall health, and disprove any false notion that you have to renounce modern life in order to obtain\u00a0inner peace <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/0-18628\/how-meditation-lengthens-telomeres-improves-overall-brain-power.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and longer telomeres<\/a>.
