Arm balances can be scary, especially when a face plant is possible. But you know you can\u2019t live life afraid of\u00a0<a title=\"Afraid of failure\" href=\"http:\/\/myyogaworksblog.com\/2013\/07\/23\/are-you-afraid-of-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\">failure<\/a>, and\u00a0Bakasana is a fun and challenging way to combat that fear. \u00a0So, give it a shot!<\/p>\n<p>The wrists and shoulders are the foundation of this pose, but it takes time to build strength in those areas, so make sure you don\u2019t push yourself too fast. You\u00a0really\u00a0don\u2019t need super-human strength\u00a0for\u00a0this pose\u2014it\u2019s more about shifting your weight and knowing when to engage the specific muscles required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting\u00a0into the pose:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From a squat position, plant your palms shoulder-width, come to the balls of your feet, open your knees and bring your knees as HIGH up on on the backs of your arms as possible. Lean forward, look forward, pick one foot up, then pick up the second foot while\u00a0shifting forward. \u00a0Protect the wrists by resisting the tendency to let your elbows splay out. \u00a0Squeeze the heels to the butt and look forward to protect your neck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Common problems we see students make:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legs aren\u2019t hooked high enough on the arms<\/li>\n<li>Weight is on outside of the hands and fingers curl up (causing wrist pain)<\/li>\n<li>Combination of too much sweat and not enough friction. We\u2019ve all been there (especially if the room is hot and you&#8217;re wearing shorts).
