{"id":23124,"date":"2015-04-16T17:12:50","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T21:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/?p=23124"},"modified":"2022-04-18T15:16:17","modified_gmt":"2022-04-18T19:16:17","slug":"small-acts-big-impact-show-planet-love-earth-day-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wanderlust.com\/de\/journal\/small-acts-big-impact-show-planet-love-earth-day-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Acts, Big Impact: Show the Planet Some Love This Earth Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we kicked off the third season of our urban, organic flower farm in the Bronx the other day, I was reminded of the tremendous impact we can have on the earth through our actions. Small deeds\u00a0such as cleaning up a neglected lot or park, planting a few organic flowers, convincing a few friends or neighbors to start\u00a0collecting food scraps, or building a bird house can make all of the difference. These small gestures inspire others to do the same, which in turn can have a huge impact on our environment. Earth Day is swiftly approaching, \u00a0so let&#8217;s look at some ways that we can\u00a0honor our planet on, before, or after April 22.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planting one tree<\/strong> can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and add as much as 260 pounds of oxygen to the atmosphere each year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanforests.org\/discover-forests\/tree-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the conservation nonprofit American Forests. There are many organizations around in North America that support people in planting trees, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arborday.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arbor Day Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bees are dying because of colony collapse, and many of the scientists who are studying this are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2014\/07\/10\/the-surprisingly-simple-reason-millions-of-bees-are-dying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blaming<\/a> the death of bees on neonicotinoids, a harmful chemical pesticide that is sprayed en masse.\u00a0Planting USDA certified organic flowers can<strong> save the bee population<\/strong>. There are 15\u00a0different varieties of flowers that are <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/04\/01\/15-plants-to-help-save-bees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known<\/a> for their ability to attract bees. If you are going to plant any of these flowers, or any flowers at all, please make sure that you are buying them from a USDA Certified Organic seed supplier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water conservation<\/strong> is also a <a href=\"http:\/\/wanderlust.com\/journal\/7-ways-reduce-daily-water-consumption\/\">big issue<\/a> that you could make a difference in on Earth Day. Organizations like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanrivers.org\/river-cleanups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Americanrivers.org<\/a> are looking for people to organize and volunteer at local river clean-ups.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many ways that you can contribute on this glorious day. Our planet is in need of your time, energy, and effort, and what better day to offer your gifts to the planet than on Earth Day. The Nature Conservancy has a<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/about-us\/volunteer\/index.htm?intc=nature.hp.sp1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of activities<\/a><\/strong> <strong>in your local area<\/strong> that you take partake in on April 22.
